Dear Mrs. Cunningham,

My name is Julie Craig, and I teach a 3/4 split in South Bend, IN. Your friend (and mine), Carol Proffitt, shared your book with me. I read it to my class a couple weeks ago, and they loved it. Two of the boys laughed out loud daily as I read it to them. One of the girls begged me to read "just one more" chapter each time. Carol gave me your address, so we could respond to your book. It has become quite the topic of conversation in here. One of my girls wondered if it was going to be available at our Scholastic Book Fair. Much to her disappointment, it was not. Where can it be purchased, by the way?

I have edited the following for spelling (hopefully) but not for content.

"I liked the chapter sixteen. I thought it was scary and funny." –Jordan

"Cynthia's Attic is my favorite chapter book. I really liked the book. It was very exciting. My favorite chapter is chapter 16." –Blake

"I thought the book was funny and interesting, it starts to get interesting at the end." –Jasimine

"My favorite part of the story (was) when the girls meet the dead boy in the story." –Wisdom

"What I liked (was) the part when they find the locket." –Austin

"I liked when they met Andre. Why did Andre turn bad?" –Nick

"The book was very interesting and mysterious. My favorite part was when Gus picked up the apple and was going to throw it at the waitress." –Korey

"This is what I think of your story...I like this story really good. I like it when Cynthia got into the pink pretty ballerina dress. I like ballerina dresses too." –Sincerely, Your fourth grade friend, Katlyn

"I love your story. It is fun to read. Hope you make another one. I know it's going to be great." –Jessenia

"Cynthia's Attic is a great book. I love the part when Cynthia knocks Andre into the lifeboat. I also like the part when Gus picks up the apple and it looks like the apple is floating." –Ben

"Why did Andre cheat on Belle and then want a second chance? Then if he loved her why did he try to kill her? I have one more question, how were the clothes able to get them to the past? The thing that I like about the book is that they have a lot of adventures. I never have had an adventure in my life." –Paige

"I really like the book. I like when they threw the apple at his head." –Elijah

"I love your book, Cynthia's Attic. My favorite part is when Gus meets Aunt Belle." –Bryant

"I liked Gus's attitude! I also liked when Cynthia and Gus met the "dead" guy!!!-ha ha ha-My favorite part was when Cynthia knocked Andre into the lifeboat." –Brandon

"I loved Cynthia's Attic. I even thought it was the best book I have ever heard. I thought it was sad when they heard Louis had died." –from Shelby

"I really liked the story, but my favorite part is when Gus tried to pick up the apple and the lady screamed. And when Aunt Belle was telling the stories. But I'm just like Cynthia, a girly girl." –Charmain

"I liked the whole book. But my favorite parts are when Cynthia pushed Andre off the boat, my other favorite part is when Gus said it would have been funny if she hit the waitress in the head with an apple. Those two were my favorite parts in the book. My dad said he's going to buy me all the Cynthia's Attic. I hope it's the best like the first one." –from Tattyanna

"I like the part when Gus and Cynthia are ghosts. What will the next story title be?" –Dudley

"Thank you for your time! Your book was the highlight of many days for a couple weeks. We all look forward to the next one in the series." –Julie Craig

About me:

* * *

Mary and her husband, Ken, live in Villa Rica, GA and are the parents of three grown children, and Molly, their beloved, adopted canine.

The idea for the Cynthia's Attic series came about through the recurring dream of a mysterious attic. Upon realizing that the dream took place in the Southern Indiana home of her childhood friend, Cynthia, the dreams stopped, and the writing began.

She is the author of "Cynthia's Attic: The Missing Locket, Book One," co-author of the humorous lifestyle book, Women Only Over Fifty, WOOF, and is published in the Gulf Coast Writers Anthology, Vol. VI.

Although "Curse of the Bayou," the third book in the series, occupies much of her time, she enjoys bike riding, golf, and exploring the Georgia mountains.

Who I'd like to meet:
Colorful pirates, SuRana--a shape-shifting puma, and an old Cajun guide named Mud Bug join Cynthia and Gus as they explore…

CURSE OF THE BAYOU

ISBN: 978-1-59080-575-6

Quake, a division of Echelon Press, LLC

from the acclaimed author of THE MAGIC MEDALLION Best Books 2006 National Book Award Finalist And THE MISSING LOCKET

The latest quest for the adventurous, twelve-year-old best friends finds them in a Louisiana bayou. There, they search for answers in the disappearance of Cynthia's great-grandfather, Beau Connor, who was on his way down the Mississippi River to sell a flatboat full of produce.

With the help of a magic trunk in Cynthia's attic, this time-traveling duo venture back to 1914 New Orleans. The warm welcome and advice from old friend, Gabriella, is small comfort when Mud Bug warns them to stay away from Buzzard Jack LaBuse, the meanest, orneriest pirate this side of the Mississippi, his gang of misfits, Snags, Darby, and Salty Sam, their thieving parrot mascot.

A trip to the Connor's Southern Indiana farm reveals a strange connection between Beau and Buzzard Jack, and a family curse that might be responsible for Cynthia's great-grandfather's disappearance. Returning to New Orleans, a harrowing ride on a roller coaster sends them farther back in time to 1844, straight into the clutches of the evil pirate, fighting for their lives. A mysterious treasure and heart-stopping adventure lead to a final confrontation in the girls' mission to save Great Granddaddy Beau.

Readers who love Mary Cunningham's
Cynthia's Attic say…

"This is a fantastic time travel fantasy that middle school children will treasure. The escapades of Gus and Cynthia grip the audience as the two friends adapt to their situation with humor and trepidation, but always with fun while trying to solve an "ancient" mystery that occurred before their parents were born. Readers will appreciate time traveling with this dynamic duo starting in THE MISSING LOCKET and continuing in the past on the high seas." –MBR Bookwatch

"...I have to admit, I was hooked from the start. THE MISSING LOCKET is reminiscent of The Magic Tree House books, so I know the appeal of this series will draw readers in. The characters are enjoyable and the mystery is not easily solved, so young girls will find plenty of enjoyment with Cynthia and Gus..." –Tracy Farnsworth, RoundTable Reviews

"...This is the start of a wonderful and fanciful series. Ms. Cunningham has spun a delightful and memorable young adult fantasy! This has all the qualities of a fantastic chapter book that can be incorporated into any school system's repertoire… What an enchanting tale! Even though this is a young adult's book, this over forty-reader thoroughly enjoyed it. ...It is a captivating combination of Nancy Drew meets Harry Potter... THE MISSING LOCKET is a treasure and, one that should be on every parent's Christmas list this year…This book comes highly regarded by this reviewer!" –Love Romances

"Cynthia's Attic by Mary Cunningham (Echelon Press) is a young adult fantasy with enough intelligence to keep the older reader interested. Cynthia discovers a magical trunk in the attic and her adventures begin." –Swords and Scribes

TEN GOLDEN RULES FOR MYSELF

 1.  I should give myself the same care and attention as I give others.

 2.  I am not an endless ‘resource’ for others, I  must stock up on ‘reserves’ and not get too drained.

 3.  I have needs to which may be different from my family’s, my friends or my colleagues.

 4.  I do not have to say ‘yes’ to all requests – or feel guilty if I say ‘no’.

5,  The ‘perfect’ parent, partner, child or career person does not exist – the ‘good-enough’ one does!

 6.  I have the right to be treated with respect as a worthwhile, intelligent and competent person.

 7.  I do not have to have everyone’s approval all the time to know that I am trying my hardest.

 8.  Time for unwinding is time very well spent.

 9.  Making mistakes is not a disaster – I can learn from these and it allows others to as well.

10. I must be fair to myself and remember, at all times especially in the face of criticism, anxiety and difficulties,
THAT I AM DOING THE BEST THAT I CAN!!

Thank you, Mary, for accepting me as a friend. Good luck with book no.4! I thought I'd leave you with a little poem about why I write - perhaps some of the sentiments expressed echo your own?

The blank page calls,
the heart responds,
imagination spreads wide its wings
and launches into infinity...
Fingers dance,
words flow,
the page fills,
the soul takes flight
and the spirit sings.
