About me:
The Boomer Esiason Foundation is a partnership of leaders in the medical and business communities joining with a committed core of volunteers to provide financial support to research aimed at finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation works to heighten education and awareness of cystic fibrosis and to provide a better quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis.Boomer Esiason enjoyed a 14-year career in the NFL as quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals. In 1993, Boomer’s son Gunnar was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. From that point on, Boomer and his wife Cheryl have vowed to eliminate the threat of CF and have been strongly committed to supporting critical research in hopes of discovering a cure for this fatal disease. This past weekend, I stepped into the GREAT STRIDES call-in room at the national office as results from around the nation were being phoned in. I can tell you that the energy, good feeling and sense of accomplishment in that room were overwhelming. Even though I know that there are many more walks to come in the months ahead and our efforts are by no means over, I wanted to take a moment on behalf of all those with cystic fibrosis, their families and the CF Foundation Board to congratulate you and the extended CF community on what already appears to be another tremendous year in our GREAT STRIDES Program. I am confident that we will approach at least a 10% growth for this year, and I am truly grateful for your outstanding efforts.
At the same time that GREAT STRIDES results were being posted, another momentous event was taking place: a new drug candidate that addresses the basic defect in CF, VX 770, entered Phase 2 clinical trials. This oral drug candidate, which aims to restore the function of the defective CFTR protein, has many steps to go before drug approval, but it is an exciting milestone in our ongoing efforts to advance drug development. Currently, we have nearly 30 potential therapies in our drug discovery and development pipeline, and we will commit over $100 mi
