Caliban - Biography
1989 – Anthony ‘Booster’ Bools and Johnny Brennan spend a summer in France working in the vineyards and return to Ireland with head full of memories and a guitar case full of songs.
1990 – Larry Shaw (violin) joins, first gigs played in Dublin in venues including Mother Redcaps, An Beal Boct and Whelans. First single ‘Dream a little Dream’ is released.
1991 – Declan Mills (drums) joins to record ‘Heart of Darkness’ and ‘Heart of Darkness II’ as a 4 piece.
1992 – First European tour, audiences in Italy reach 10,000 and more.
1994 – Davie Byrne (bass) joins. Band tours 4 months in Italy and Sicily with new album ‘Blood from a Stone’.
1995 – New members Albert Cowan (drums) and Joe Wearan (guitar) join the band to do a short tour of south Italy with ‘Silk Purse’ studio album, playing to audiences of 18,000.
1996 – ‘Dal Vivo’ a live album of the previous years tour is released to resounding success. This is the first album to capture the raw energy of the Caliban gigs and once again the band go on tour. Dal Vivo is the most successful album of Caliban’s career.
1997 – Exhausted band members take a break from the touring circuit and sleep for most of the year.
1998 – Band undertake solo projects, Booster writes new songs.
1999 – A brief foray into the world of country blues sees the band go undercover and release an album under the moniker ‘The Old Hat Band.’ (Italian release only)
2000 – Caliban return to form, new band members Ken Whelan (accordion) and Niall Hoare (bass) join existing members Booster, Al and Larry to record their new album X:AM. Guest artists on the album include John Earle (Thin Lizzy) and Paul Doyle (Providence.) Foundation is recorded as a duet with Michele Ann Kelly performing.
2001 – A short tour of Ireland, and Gerry O’Shaugnessy (electric guitar) is roped into proceedings to turn Caliban into a six-piece. An appearance at the folk festival in Lorient results in tons of new fans. To the consternation of organisers and the delight of fans, Caliban vow to return to Brittany. Due to the popularity of the band at Lorient a decision is made to add a ‘Rock’ section to the festival. Back in Ireland they join forces with all girl band ‘Cuisle’ for a series of gigs. Also released this year ‘Old, New, Borrowed and Blue’ an album of rarities, b-sides, out-takes and covers.
2002 – Another tour of France and Italy, with a few gigs in Ireland.
2003 – Mick Cowley replaces Niall Hoare on bass. The band performs a series of unplugged gigs in Dublin and head to Killorglan ‘Puck Fair’ where they play for a crowd of 8,000. Rumour has it the goat was well impressed.
2004 – Caliban tour extensively in Ireland, record their first video and gain another new member in the form of Mairead O’Donnell. (Violin)
2005 – Plans for the year ahead include the release of a new single and video ‘Medusa’, recording a new album, tours of Ireland, Europe and possibly Japan. In addition to this the band have a brand new song available exclusively on a compilation album to be released by Seachtain na Gaeilge on the 4th of March. Sung in Irish this adds another language in which the band have recorded, Italian, French and Spanish, being the others.
And then, we kind of went our seperate ways for a while, Anthony (me) recorded Repent at Leisure, and toured with a variety of Musicians, Alison O'Donnel, Sean O'Connor, Xiung Ni, Tomás O'Brion, Brendan O'Sullivan to mention a few, sometimes as Caliban, sometimes as Anthony. Still playing as either or both.
Currently playing Bodhrán and singing in Dublin Trad band LAD LANE, and reunited with Joe Wearen singing new songs after a break for a year or so from original material, expect new recordings soon.

Hey Booster! Thanks for the add. I hope you are keeping well! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I hope to be back in Dublin soon. Hoping in the Spring. Take care!
Hey Booster, for some reason it's not letting me send you an email so I have to post my reply here for all the world to see.
I wish I had checked my email before I left now. A pint would have been awsome. We had an amazing time at the crawl. I'm still singing the chorus to "Johnny Jump Up" every so often. We took your advice and went to Cobblestones that night after we left the crawl. It was exactly the local kind of experience that we were looking for. (Wicked cider is amazing!) We walked the wrong direction for a little bit then just got in a cab. lol Sometimes as a tourist you have to embrace the fact that you're a big dumb tourist. lol But we really try for a local experience as much as possible to at least try to get a feel for what it's really like someplace. From the local cusine (my girlfriends priority), to the music (my priority), and ecspecially to the people. We loved Dublin! It actually reminds me of New Orleans a good bit. Music is a huge part of the culture that we're very proud of. We even have have the same kind of wakes. (Ours just usually involves a brass band playing dirges and dixieland jazz). There was a place called poverty hill pickin' parlor I used to walk to on weekends as a kid. It was always a random collection of instruments and whoever showed up, getting together to "pick." I usually involved drinking moonshine, playing bluegrass and delta blues. The best part for me was that a lot of the guys who showed up would leave me there instruments during the week to play with until the next weekend. I got to play on dulcimers, mandolins, banjos, washtub basses, guitars, and other oddities. What's funny is that I never mastered any of those instruments but it hooked me on music forever and tought me to love the diversity. That's what I loved about Ireland. The community of musicians you have there and the support you give each ot

They sang "I won't, I won't do it again - even if I'm 100, 110" and "barrel of whiskey". We knew the song, by then, but it was like the "old dead energyless" version!
Best wishes from Fruits de Mer Records, a small but perfectly-formed new psych/prog label.
Just posted - Record Collector magazine's review of our first single (and they love it)
PLUS old and new videos, all the latest news on our single (Small Faces' Ogden's meets Van der Graaf Generator's Theme One - a very limited coloured vinyl pressing) , a few random live reviews, old jokes and all manner of stuff - plus early news on our new project, with Mellow Candle's Alison O'Donnell!
