Books"Nation, Immigration, and Environmental Security," by Dr. Jessica LeAnn Urban
All proceeds are being donated to Border Action Network!
In "Nation, Immigration, and Environmental Security," Dr. Urban interrogates mainstream environmental security discourse in the United States, with particular emphasis on immigration across the U.S./Mexico border. Urban also advances alternative approaches grounded not in the greening of hate, but in social, environmental, and reproductive justice for all.
"At last a book that makes the critical link between all too commonly accepted neo-Malthusian ideologies of environment and security and the militarization of border control. Through careful textual interpretation and political investigation, Urban not only shows how these ideologies function to scapegoat immigrants, but how feminist intersectional analysis and activism help open the way to a more progressive vision that connects immigrant rights to environmental and social justice." --Betsy Hartmann, Ph.D., Director of the Population and Development Program, Hampshire College, and co-editor of Making Threats: Biofears and Environmental Anxieties.
From the Back Cover - Praise for Nation, Immigration, and Environmental Security
"Dr. Urban dissects the dangerous and obfuscating rhetoric that links environmental degradation, hunger, and poverty with immigration and women's fertility. Her clear-headed analysis and accessible language makes this timely book an indispensable resource for students, scholars, organizers, and policy-makers on this crucial and urgent issue." --Gwyn Kirk, Ph.D., Women for Genuine Security.
"Nation, Immigration & Environmental Security interrogates 'the greening of hate' from an intersectional postcolonial feminist perspective that exposes the lethal, neo-Malthusian politics of 'Environmental Security' frameworks in academic, media, policy, and mainstream environmentalist discourse and foregrounds the political analysis and transformative social vision of the growing, immigrant-led movement for human rights and environmental and economic justice in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Urban's work offers a crucial and timely intervention in contemporary scholarly, activist, and policy debates over border security, global social justice and environmental sustainability." --Zoe Hammer, Ph.D., Scholar/Activist, Border Action Network, U.S.-Mexico Border & Immigration Task Force, Prescott College for the Liberal Arts and the Environment.
About the Author - Jessica LeAnn Urban is an Assistant Professor in the Women’s Studies and Multicultural Queer Studies Programs at Humboldt State University.

   borderaction.org's Blurbs
About me:
Border Action Network formed in 1999 and works with immigrant and border communities in southern Arizona to ensure that our rights are respected, our human dignity upheld and that our communities are healthy places to live. We are a membership-based organization that combines grassroots community organizing, leadership development, litigation and policy advocacy. The current political climate attests to the urgency of our long-term goal: to build the voice and power of those who are impacted the most by border and immigration policies and to build a national movement that calls for the fulfillment of human rights in this country. During our first three years the organization was run entirely by volunteers. Since then we have expanded to four staff and more than 500 members. Through the years, Border Action Network has built relationships and launched campaigns that have resulted in the prosecution of border vigilantes, agreements with local police departments against enforcing immigration, training and engaging immigrant families in the political process and the struggle for comprehensive immigration reform, and developing protocols for border enforcement practices that uphold constitutional and human rights.
Who I'd like to meet:
HOW YOU CAN HELP The movement for human rights is growing and Border Action Network is building the infrastructure to take the movement forward no matter what happens in Congress in the next weeks. We are creating human rights committees of immigrants' and border residents' who are fighting for the human rights of all people and to make policy changes locally and nationally. We invite you to join our struggle. Donate to support human rights.

Your contribution will support the hundreds of “defensores comunitarios/community defenders” who are working on the border to transform our communities into places where everyone leads lives with dignity.

Border Action and our allies are creating teams of people in each border state who will go door-to-door to document the violations of immigrant’s and border resident’s human rights. This information will be added to an on-line secure database shared with border organizations from New Mexico, Texas and California. We’ll co-produce a series of reports with an international human rights organization analyzing the patterns of abuse. And then we’ll use those reports to inform our communities and to pressure national and local decision-makers to change their policies and stop rights violations.

Using this strategy Border Action and our allies have already made significant steps forward and reduced human rights violations on the Tohono O'odham nation and in Southern New Mexico and El Paso.

Make a secure online contribution so that we can train more community defenders and create real solutions to our human rights crisis.

You are invited to be a part of this important campaign for human rights on the border. We have launched a fundraising drive to make sure that this campaign reaches from the backyards of border communities to the halls of Congress. Your $10, $20, $50 or $100 will make a difference. We're a lean and mean organization that is getting results. No fancy desks, no DC lobbyists. Just thousands of immigrants, border residents and their allies working together for change.

People from across the country have invested in this work and have shown that this fight is not just for immigrants but for everyone. I ask you to contribute now, when it is critically important.

POEM OF LIGHT

Beyond your eyes exists a world
That all can learn to see
Within this world exists for us
Infinite possibility

Many are lost in darkness
And cannot find their way
Because they choose to believe the lies
They hear from day to day

The future's yours the future's yours,
If you open your mind
Discover what you do not know
And greater truth you'll find

You and me and everyone are all beings of light
We can all live in harmony,
If we increase our sight,
Open your heart open your mind,
And see your path anew
The greatest joy in life will come
From Loving Being You!

Love all of life's Creations
Take time and you will grow
To know the truth and see the light and all you wish to know
Your energy creates life and knowledge is for sure
Come know yourself,
The universe,
And So Much, So Much More...
