Born Under Burden, much like its music has seen its share of unexpected changes, odd times, and explosiveness. Also like the music the band has pushed on to a steady beat through a two year hiatus which has seen the departure of two of the bands founding members. The vision of the band, and the creative core of the music could be said to be refined in the crucible of time, however remains the same as it was when the band initially formed in February 2004.
Rising from the ashes of two well respected aggressive projects, the initial lineup consisted of Circle of Illusion guitarists Aaron Crick, and Mark Thomas, along with drummer Duane Walters. Salem’s Childe yielded bassist James Gates, and the lineup was rounded off with the vocals of a new arrival on the scene in Andre Young. With this lineup the guys launched an aggressive campaign playing shows in each of Indiana’s major music cities, as well as hitting the regional circuit with some success.
The band built a reputation as a community conscious, yet hard hitting band, putting on benefit concerts for local and national charities, as well as sponsoring a monthly metal night in Kokomo which served for a time to reinvigorate the metal scene in north central Indiana.
The band went on hiatus after their last ‘official’ show in Waukesha WI, but nobody could have predicted that it wouldn’t be until almost 2 years later that Duane and Aaron would reconnect regarding a live show and studio outtake DVD project Duane had independently been working on. Aaron and James screened the DVD once it was finished and the fire was rekindled. Duane, Aaron, and James made the decision to continue in the tradition and mood of the band, but also to challenge and explore new frontiers with the music.
So far the studio work tends towards much of the ‘new’ unreleased material that the band had when it all came to a stop 2 years ago. Tempo and timing shifts abound mercilessly assaulting and challenging even the most discerning listener, though the underlying melodies, creative riffing, and snaky basslines all seem to be just enough to hold it all together. With the wide range of experience in this band, and the combination of musical massacre and stage mastery their fans have come to know and love, the anticipation for the new material, and to hear the new voice of Born Under Burden is nearly palpable.
Stay tuned faithful friends.. the results are soon to come!
