    Cosmic Doll

    Cosmic Doll

When he emerged upon the stage
The crowd withheld their stores of rage
And sighed one sigh of endless glee
In knowing that a superstar could see

The crowd of people shouting out
For him the star who was about
To sing to them a well known song
Of which the crowd could sing along

The group played the intro to the hit
Of which that stunning star had writ
This song was not an ordinary one
And before it started a shot from a gun

Rang out among the joining crowd
Who said the group was far too loud
And hit a roadie in the head
The star said “Part of the act, he isn’t dead!”

The first great song was soon ended
And the crowd were sure their minds were bended
A boy sitting in the front row
Said he really dug the show

But soon the star had left the stage
The crowd shouted “More!” with fists of rage
And so the superstar came back
And nothing did that great man lack

Then he left again to everyone’s disgust
“Bring him back or we’ll turn to dust!”
The cosmic doll came back once more
Then the whole audience fell to the floor

Our superstar came back to us twice
And I think that was rather nice
But soon the final song was done
Although the crowd liked this one

He had to leave, oh what a shame
But it stuck in my mind the great mans name
“Who was it that you’ve been to see?”
Said I “The Cosmic Doll, Bowie!”

Star shine creeps through the brain cells
As countless numbers of insane private eyes
Look round corners into the lamp lit darkness of the evening
Many live only as a reminiscence of yesterdays lies

The cold blue night air seeped through the ventilation shafts
The materialoids were not to be seen
The silence of lumbering souls became part of the night
Whilst those still fettered in chains were behind their azmoid screens

The more I gazed upon this nighttime reality
I was dragged as if by force into the centre of infinity
I now became part of that informality of life
Of which so little meant a cause for human sanity

The dreaded doors of life closed behind me
I was in the land of never ending gloom
Should I pass through to the new heaven
Or remain here and unthoughtfully relive my doom

Return was impossible so I breathed no more!

    The Bowie Cult

With strange desires to become future people
All Bowie's followers begin to look different
Their minds change and their movement is slender and deep
Whilst visions of wonder give his disciples their joy

They listen to his music and talk silently of Mars
And how not known by them Bowie will take them to the stars
To be ahead in time they think is Bowie's gift to them
And surely without his music they'd be ordinary men

They buy clothes like their hero Dave
Their hair is not their own
They think to be a Bowoid will be an endless dream
Bowie must have millions stashed away at home

The words stick in their heads
    Their thoughts somehow become
Nothing but the words of songs
    It seems that Bowie's won

Visions are part of the life his chosen lead
They know in satisfaction the Bow-words are a creed
The Bowie cult will spread and spread
And Bowie a legend but not dead

I took a ride with Major Tom
A journey into space that went wrong
    A musical simulation
Of a rocket’s take off vibrations
    Took me beyond Apollo
Left him in space alone with no tomorrow

    Over the rainbow far away
A “Starman” was waiting for us to play
When an arm went round Ronno
On the “Top of the Pops” show
The smiles of Mick and Dave
Were of friends like brothers you know

The title of an album grabbed my eye
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders I had to buy
From “Five Years” to the “Suicide”
    I kept the volume high
I freaked out in the “Moonage Daydream”
With the “Soul Love” I could scheme

I told my cousin this new story
She asked if I’d heard “Hunky Dory”
I hadn’t she played it to me in stereo
I had to have the album
To “Fill My Heart” with songs of random
Happiness and uplifting songs I could stand on

    Coming back from the States
A neighbour who was a mate
Brought me a double album cover rare
By this time I had “Space Oddity”
And “Aladdin Sane” so I didn’t care
“The Man Who Sold The World” had got me there

    The Cosmic Doll’s concert
At St George’s Bradford was one set
I’ll never forget as long as I can
I was now a rock star fan
A bowieboy growing into a man
With all the songs that I still demand

So more than thirty years have passed
I still think Bowie is a blast
I loved the ride he took us on
The Gemini spaceship trip was fun
    Halloween Jack Nathan Adler and
The Thin White Duke are all in the band

My life as a Bowie fan
    You might not understand
But if the “China Girl” says “Let’s Dance”
I bet you do! This “Modern Love” is catchy
And even “Ashes to Ashes” might remind you
Major Tom’s “Fame” is forever now true

About me:

When I look back over my life, I realize that when I have risen to the occasion; lived in “The Spirit” of the events I have encountered; when I have fulfilled my purpose in being here; seized the day and the opportunities that surrounded me – I have been most truly alive!

However, it is in the way I have expressed myself, the nuances of my speech, my body language, my facial expressions, in the way that I have expressed my passions, and in my interactions with others, that I will be truly remembered!
