old time string band tunes, conscious hip-hop, and everything in between. some current stuff we like: ozo matli, the coup, ded prez, spearhead, antibalas, bitch and animal, le tigre, mirah, be good tanyas, carolina chocolate drops, and MIA. some friends and local artists we love: enoch the messenjah, crimson spectre, jay eye the vet, blank-blank, tasuma, sugar on shit, and marijuana wolf. some other artists/bands that we've been privileged to play with: amaris howard, the dolly ranchers, the future kings of nowhere, this bike is a pipe bomb, david rovics, homo squared, dasan ahanu, team gina, marla hooch, and outernational. oh, and LONG LIVE CAKALAK THUNDER!!
Sounds Like
maybe if the violent femmes were southern anarcha-feminists with female vocals and a bit more soul. its been said that we sound like the indigo girls meets motorhead, but we feel more like the dixie chicks meets the clash. we also hope its obvious that we listen to a lot of hip hop.

BOXCAR BERTHA began as duo - nego and larkin found each other in greensboro, nc. they discovered a mutual love for bikes, southern cookin, and good harmonies. they started playing together - larkin on drums, nego on guitar - and played their first show in a parking lot in late oct. of 2000, at a free show that nego helped to organize called 'youth culture against the police state.'
danny, and his hot pink bass, joined the band in spring of 2004. *we're currently groomin' the phenomenal banjo boi, one song at a time.*
boxcar bertha prefers to play shows where the unifying factor is the politics, not the musical genre or fashion style. we enjoy playing for mixed audiences, and sharing the stage with lots of different kinds of artists who are all down for radical social change. we believe that revolution is not just about the science of politics and economics, but also about culture, of which music is a crucial element.

Feb. 3rd 07', I, and many other hard working and dedicated individuals organized a charity benefit for my trans-brother T (Talos) Travis. We made over $1,200 at the door alone that night because caring people like you came out to support us. We thank you. However, the check from Blend, (Chapel Hill, NC) was supposed to be sent directly to the surgeon, Dr. Davis of Raleigh. Dr. Davis had scheduled a surgery date for T for Sept. 4th, 07'. I repeatedly gave the manager of Blend, Idan, the address of the doctor's office and deadline of the surgery in order to get the check off in time. I even had a conversation with Idan in front of his mother reminding him to mail the check. For the past two months, I have tried calling him and stopping by Blend to find out the status of the check and no one seemed to know what I was talking about and I have never heard back from Idan. Then, I call the owner of Blend, Amit, in Brooklyn, NY to try and find out what has happended to the check in hopes of getting T his surgery on time. He had no idea about any of this and said he would get back to me after he called Idan, his brother and manager of Blend. Now, two weeks later no one will answer their phone or return my calls and T never had his surgery..... I can't express to you how much I had felt like I had dissappointed my own brother nor can I express to you through words the look on his face when I had to tell him that Blend did not send the check and no one is responding. I have no idea how any business or person for that matter can do such a thing?? It makes me sick to think back on all the hard work everyone put into this benefit, for what??? Blend not only robbed T but all of us who put our hearts and souls into this event! Please re-post as much as possible to get the word out and if anyone has any suggestions or help to fight this please let me know. Kegan
This is the official call for submissions for the 2008 Sex Workers' Art Show Tour! Anyone of any gender who has worked in the sex industry is encouraged to apply: porn stars, strippers, escorts, dommes, webcam models, hookers, etc.
THE SHOW: The Sex Workers' Art Show is a cabaret-style evening of visual and performance art created by people who work in the sex industry. The artwork and performances offer a wide range of perspectives on sex work, moving beyond "positive" and "negative" into a fuller articulation of the complicated ways sex workers experience our jobs and our lives. You can read more about the show at www.sexworkersartshow.com.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: Sex trade workers are in a unique position to observe the freaky dynamics of capitalism, desire, ownership, gender, and race. We are looking for hilarious, disturbing, challenging, entertaining, accessible work that addresses these issues. Or, you know, whatever else. You don't have to be an experienced performer to apply! We're interested in a range of mediums- spoken word, burlesque, music, video and performance art of all kinds.
THE DEAL: The tour is happening late January through early March 2008. It hits approximately 30 cities nationwide, in a bit over a month. More info about pay and logistics is available on our blog. Email or message us for info about how to submit, at info@sexworkersartshow.com. Submissions must be received by September 25th.

i really enjoyed playin with ya'll and hangin out last night. i look forward to the next time. bring the baby on tour to gainesville yo! we're kid friendly! :)
so... dunno if i ever told ya'll this, but...
I *used* to teach dance to a bunch of middle-high schoolers out in Pleasant Garden (hah yeah that's so over now) and would always use "WEF" for my foot warm-up combination in my pointe classes. The younger gals really loved that song... had 'em singing along by the end of the year. Just thought you'd like to know ya'll were changing the rhythms of young suburban princess' lives. ;)
this is me crusty with sadness that no one in the state of north carolina writes back to me with words like, "yes lars i'll help you get a spot to play here on your tour!" so watch for me busking in downtown greensboro around the 14th of June! :)
