Box Rocks first started on the 30th May, Bank Holiday Monday, 1994 at The Queens Head in Box, Wiltshire (hence the name Box Rocks.) A group of like-minded musicians (after a few drinks of course) thought it would be a good idea to get a few bands, lots of alcohol and a local charity together, and perform on the roof overlooking the gardens and car park at The Queens Head. After the first few years we were advised that putting musicians and alcohol 8 feet in the air was not the best idea, so we move the stage into the garden at ground level.
The event was moved to the August Bank Holiday Monday back in 2002, due to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee (and therefore the loss of the Whitson Bank Holiday). Also at this time, and because of its popularity and growing audience, we decided to move the stage into the car park where there was room for a bigger stage and larger viewing area. This saw the advent of the format that we use today: 8 bands over 8 hours, finishing off with a bit of a show. The ‘show’ was first provided by rock legends The Crinklies, but since their retirement (on reaching the dizzy height of their career headlining Box Rocks that year) the task of completing the day fell on to the shoulders of The Rockin’ Horrors, who have stepped into The Crinklies’ glittery 6 inch soled shoes admirably with performances such as: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, and The Blues Brothers Vs The Commitments. What they will be doing this year is anybody’s guess!
Over the years, Box Rocks has raised thousands of pounds for the RUH Forever Friends appeal and other local charities. The day would not be the huge success that it has become without the support of all the bands, sound and lighting crew, and a good deal of good local people giving their time, effort and services free of charge - although Dean the landlord does end up paying indefinitely with favours and beer ALL OF THE MUSIC TRACKS IN OUR PLAY LIST WERE RECORDED LIVE AT BOX ROCKS.
