Esso admits that it has a ‘vested interest’ in stopping governments from taking action on climate change.
For over a decade, it has attempted to sabotage international negotiations on the issue and block agreements which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s thanks to corporations like Esso that the US ditched the Kyoto Protocol, the only international agreement to deal with climate change.
With only five percent of the world’s population, the US is responsible for emitting 25 percent of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Esso wants to keep it that way.
Esso even denies that climate change is caused by the burning of fossil fuels and has spent millions of dollars funding front organisations to reinforce its position.
To protect its own profits, Esso opposes the switch to clean energy. Despite being one of the world’s richest companies, Esso doesn’t invest a single dollar in renewable energy.
In fact Esso would like to see a massive increase in fossil fuel use over the next 20 years - a scenario that would send climate change spiralling out of control.
Esso chooses to wreck the climate.
