Foundering and bewildered when his band Conelrad ceased normal operations in September 2005, Pittsburgh-based guitarist/vocalist Adam MacGregor sought out John Roman (drums, Microwaves/Pay Toilets/ex-1985) to launch Brown Angel with depth-charge bassist Mike Rensland (Magic Wolf) in October 2005. Drawing from a mutual obsession with 80s industrial music, true thrash and speed metal and pretty much any artist that resembled the Swans or Godflesh, the trio immediately set about recording a demo cassette, titled Vomitter [sic] that set a new standard in low-fidelity recording practices. However, the listener who persevered through the sonic grit might find reward in the bands churning anti-grooves, feedback outbursts and jangling dissonance that border on post psychedelia - the aural equivalent of Jackson Pollock on a particularly bad paint fume-bender. Central and vital to the bands sound is the Rensland/Roman axis an abandoned oil tanker lurching in time with an unaccented android pulse. However, not all is cold and gloom in the realm of Brown Angel: Consider the hint of eastern influence, as evidenced by the performance of Indian devotional and popular songs. Not surprising, given the members past affinities for musical incongruity.
Brown Angel continues to play locally and throughout the midatlantic region, and will record a full-length album with Jason Kirker (of fellow Pittsburghers Modey Lemon) at H-Hour studios in March of 2006.
