Since publicly christening themselves Run With Bulls in February onstage at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge, this blistering new rock outfit is making some serious noise on the Music City rock scene.
Like Nashville-based rock bands before them from Jason & the Scorchers to Kings Of Leon, Run With Bulls are a mix of influences, all galvanized with the musical vision, fiery licks and gritty vocals of charismatic lead guitarist/vocalist and principle songwriter Brad Sample.
Though only 23, Sample has held a guitar since he was in single digits and had been kicking around Nashville bands for years before hitting on a potent onstage alchemy with musical compatriots Phillip Turner on drums and Chris James on bass. The chemistry of Sample with Turner and James brings to fruition the musical possibilities Sample has dreamed of since devoting himself to rock and roll after seeing an Erika Badu/Bob Dylan/Black Crowes concert at young age.
The mission is unpretentious, simple and pure. “When I first started out I basically just wanted to be a loud rock and roll band that people could be introspective about and listen to every word and lyric and nuance,” Sample muses. “Then I started realizing more and more that nobody really cares that much about me and probably never will, and that’s totally fine. So with Chris and Phillip, we started trying to make music that we really love and we think people are really gonna dig and have a fun time listening to. And the style we usually shoot for is just a Nashville rock sound.”
The description may sound ambiguous but the groove is dead-on, with strains of country, blues, modern rock and R&B coalescing in a style uniquely Run With Bulls. And, clearly, it’s a sound that’s still evolving and totally ignites on stage. Prolific writers, RWB is constantly adding new songs to their arsenal. “We all love country, we all love blues, and we all love Radiohead,” says Sample. “Any time somebody has an idea we try not to shoot it down.”
With a far-ranging set list of originals such as the syncopated, modern-rock sound of "Arrythmia Shuffle," blues/rock raveups like "Shotgun" and "Leave My Shirt On," hard-edged rockers like "Meet Me in the Middle" and "Jealousy," stirring, radio-ready ballads in "Elizabeth" and "Forgiven," and impossible-to-define set pieces in "Munich" and "Old & Holy Vine," Run With Bulls' live shows are quickly becoming the stuff of local legend. The trio find an onstage alchemy and explosive energy that represents all that is right in rock and roll. Led by Sample's raging guitar and otherworldly vocals, this is rock music as it is meant to be played, powered by thundering, versatile bass and inspired drumming that cracks, snaps and booms.
Run With Bulls is a fully-charged, powerhouse triple threat, with powerful songs, simple, passionately and honestly delivered. Sample describes his band mates thusly: “Chris is really creative, you tell him what you want in a song, and he takes it to a different level. He thinks like a bass player, acts like a bass player and plays like a bass player, all in his own way. Chris likes to be in his own turf and not get in anybody¹s way. When people come over into his turf, he finds a different way to go.
"Philip is just a monster,” Sample continues. “He can take a song that I think has no place for drums of any kind and somehow weave them into the DNA of the music as if the whole idea for the song started with the drums. He finds ways to tell a story with the drums. It's pretty amazing.
He is a very musical drummer with great feel and a ton of power! He can hit them pretty hard."
Today Run With Bulls is a rock band with its artistic vision firmly in place and a world of new territories to discover. “A few months ago we were playing this gig, there was a solo, then it came out where we¹re playing this rhythm thing,” Sample recalls. “I was listening to it and I had this epiphany: I couldn’t help but thinking this was what I always wanted to sound like, right here, right now. All of a sudden all the gears came together, it was exactly what I had wanted for years.” Now is the time for the world to Run With Bulls. Start running with ‘em or get outta the way.

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:
Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
