With an arsenal of riff laced pop tunes and a killer live set, Braindead Lovers have arrived. A genuine turn of phrase with a passion for the craft of song writing goes a long way these days. Inspired by the likes of T-rex and Bowie, throwing in some big beats and a British punk edge to match, Braindead Lovers unique brand of song is born.... Thanks largely to the raw energy created on stage, the band have forged a strong reputation for their live set. Having already played with The Divinyls, Dallas Crane, Magic Dirt, British India, 67 Special, The Dardanelles, Dukes of Windsor, Airbourne, Children Collide, Architecture in Helsinki, Rocket Science, The Lime Spiders, Casanovas, The Galvatrons, Calling All Cars and many more the bands appeal crosses over to an array of different audiences.
Playing in previous outfits together Fox Fagan and Cam Adams decided to leave and start something of their own. "I already had quite a few songs of my own for us to play and one had an opening line that read "Listen up Braindead Lovers", Cam suggested that as band name so we were born then and there. We got a good mate of ours Peter Maslen to help out on drums and played our first show at the now defunct and very burnt Palace complex in St Kilda". Fagan explains. Two weeks later, Braindead Lovers found themselves supporting Casanovas at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, followed by a string of solid supports for well known local bands over the next six months. Completing the outfit with a new drummer Aaron Grzesiak, the band was now primed to hit the road in full effect, "things really picked up when we found Azz. As soon as he stepped in we got offered a national tour with Dallas Crane and shortly after that the Divinyls asked us to support them on their first tour in 10 years".
On the creative process Braindead lovers adopt a no rules approach to song writing and production, "normally songs are written by myself or together with Cam and are created in my bedroom on a home studio in our apartment in St. Kilda, Melbourne.... (To paint the picture think Fight Club, The Young ones and then throw in a night caller who's made herself at home taking up residence in the backyard!). Having already produced the songs at home to a high quality and tested them in front of crowds live we are pretty sorted with how we want them sound once in a larger studio situation." The self-titled debut EP was self-produced after entering a studio for the first time with the initial vision to use a name producer. "We tried two different guys and weren't all that happy with the results and always reverted back to the home made demos and we were like…It should sound more like this, which didn't go down so well. Then we just thought fuck it, lets go to our sound guys place and do it ourselves, so we took all the files from the original demo's (A lot of which made the final cut) and made the EP ourselves with our sound guy Ricki Rae engineering".
The band's influences are constantly evolving as they discover new music and rediscover the pioneers. "At the time of recording the EP I was listening to loads of Iggy pop, T-rex, Arctic monkeys, Art Brut, David Bowie, I'm not sure if it shows, I don't really care, I just play what comes out. If I'm listening to heaps of Jay Z or Timbaland when we record next I reckon we'll still sound like us."
An undeniable talent on stage and an incredible sounding EP is paving the way for these 3 lads. Couple that with the brashness of youth and a love for the art of a well penned tune and you have all the makings for something quite special.
Strong uptake on the EP’s first radio single SAPPER’S APPETITE with support from Triple J (Home & Hosed), community radio and regional commercial radio will all compliment Braindead Lovers’ involvement in the inaugural Australian JD SET music initiative. As part of JD SET the band will receive NATIONAL NOVA AIRPLAY, a dedicated press publicist and the opportunity to land a slot on a national tour with two other bands taking part in this brilliant initiative for new Australian music.
