   About Brand Disloyalty
You guys were called Brand Loyalty at first, why the change? One day, Shogun gave me a call out of nowhere asking me to play bass in a band he had started with Shortty and Ari from Fistfull who I had only both met once a couple of months before. This was five/six years ago and we were a completely different band - different members playing different instruments in a totally different style... We were called Brand Loyalty, and Shogun had thought up the name, but the band didnt really last long. There was always an air of tension in the band back then and it was pretty much inevitable it was going to end. Shogun and Ari were unofficially referred to as the husband and wife of the band because of their constant differences. At one practice, these differences moved from a quarrel and escalated from that into a full on domestic. Shogun threw his guitar, hitting Ari, who keeping his cool, didnt return any violent favours and only the four letter word heaps and telling Shogun to get the fuck out of his house and not to come back. Shogun left for a lone 2 hour walk back to Gordon station. At that point it not only awkward, it was obvious that this was the end of our last ever practice and the band was over. Years later when Shortty and I started a band again, we were trying to think up a name for our new, as of yet 2 piece band. Some ideas (that we thankfully never used) were Gamma Seed and Negligent Morons. Finally we figured that since that our previous band was now nonexistent and that we were both a significant part of it, using our old name was a definite option, considering our previous piss-poor efforts in coming up with a new name. The name stayed as Brand Disloyalty until around the time when we recorded the demo. Contrary to anything Micko might have said to anyone about the change being attributable to crust drumming, the truth is that I decided that 'Brand Loyalty' sounded too much like a marketing buzz word and I preferred Brand Disloyalty as a name. It has never, and was never about Shortty playing Dis-beats(which he doesnt). Also, the words as term are never used and I liked its unpopularity and negativity. Having this new name also meant that our new band no longer had the same name as the old band. In those second last sentences I used the word 'I' much more than 'we' because I dont think Shortty or Paul knew I wanted to change anything. Instead of Brand Loyalty, I started referring to the band as Brand-Dis-loyalty all of the time and for everything. I would recommend this method to anyone who wants to gamble on the long shot of changing their bands name without any other members permission, against the high risk* that this move might make you an absolute cunt. * (Possible odds may be around nine-thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine to one. A suitable comparison would be: Walking along holding a skateboard and guessing the single step on a road 1km long, where someone driving by wouldnt indecipherably yell out - "skate or die" or - "Fuck You, You Cunt") I vaguely recall that Paul and Shortty might have been slightly against the change. Anyway, around that time the insert for the demo needed to be designed and Shortty did that himself. Since I had nothing to do with the design and it ended up being printed as Brand Disloyalty, my constantly being a cunt either wore Shortty down or there had been some sort of agreement between all of us. Actually.... Make that two of us. At that time Paul was most likely in Morocco, which is the last place you would want to debate anything band related, or anything non-Morocco related for that matter. Once it was on the demo as Brand Disloyalty, that was pretty much it, and there was no changing back. Some people were kind of annoyed when they saw that it had changed, and I was definitely surprised at how many times I was pleaded with to change it back to Brand Loyalty, just because it wasnt as clunky a word to say. But in the end it doesnt really matter. Basically.... everyone in the band still refers to the band with both names, and everyone else uses either name as well. In the beginning we stole the name of our old band off Shogun, and later on I changed it slightly using the antonym of the stolen name.1 1(If you run out of space in your zine you only need print this bit)2 2(Space allowing, these subscripts may make a humorous reflection on an overlong answer to an otherwise simple question)3 3(Actually, since you say at the end of the interview to answer in as much or as little detail as I like, you can ignore the superscripts 1 and 2) 4Paul would like to note that he does not agree with the account above but has decided that it is entertaining enough to stay with his approval. Did you ever have particular aims for the band? (Have they changed over time?) (Fake Answer) -- No, our only aim is to eliminate all expectation of change and remain completely static and out of touch with reality, removing any environmental factors which may induce any improvement or measurable difference in our performance or creative process. -- Without intending to be rude, there is now a problem continuing my response. In your haste is that you assumed the answer for the first part of the question to start with "Yes, ... ", then not accounting for the possibility of an answer such as the above, you continued on with a second question (in brackets for some reason) following up on this assumed answer of yes, either trying to pad out the interview and predict the future, insulting my yet to be written hideously short response of "Yes.", or as a cruel reminder as to the relationship of past success or failure and the consequential self re-evaluation. A reminder of how we might have underestimated what we could achieve as a band, and one goal wasnt nearly enough and now we were always having to set out new shit to do in order to feed our constant egotistical desire for success. Or how we excelled at mediocrity with such proficiency that we could never realise our delusional dreams & upon regaining at least some semblance of a grasp of reality we set some realistic goals which were more easily within our retarded reach. Shit like that would make for an interesting answer for sure, but the complete opposite could be said if you were asking if our aims change, but not over time. Having one constant aim that never changed and that we purposely sought to never achieve would be pointless. Alternately, if we set ourselves an aim but with zero seconds within which to attain it, that might result in us setting some infinite number of aims every second. Individual aims in quantities so large that they be cant be expressed as a real number, consuming our entire lives with constant failure and attempts to make the impossible possible. Actually, using three-hundred and thirty-four words to answer 0% of this interview question means that completing this section is going to be impossible unless I stop crapping on about what I could write, but wouldnt write, but did write. At this point one of my aims is to make sure I actually answer this question or(Real Answer) having some sort of European tour happen sometime in the future. When Headless Horsemen did it years ago, to me it made international exposure and success seem a realistic possibility for any band willing enough to get their shit together and not fuck around. When I say success, I dont mean unit shifting, name-making and fame, but more playing shows and everything working out well just enough to play the next show. If we organize ourselves its a definite possibility of happening, but theres so many factors its going to be staying as possibility for quite a while. As a band we dont really set ourselves aims that I can think of. I dont see much point trying to set aims in a band other than to have fun playing and writing music. But trying to consciously achieve something like that is only selfdefeating. Even if we did set anything to do it wouldnt get done for some reason. At first we might have had some aim to record our demo and now its maybe to get our 7" finished before were all geriatrics taking anti-inflammatory medication and catching a white church-sponsored shuttle-bus to practice where we play the triangle by drooling on it and on our Zimmer frames and stare out into space past our advanced glaucoma and into the kaleidoscope of unreality. Apart from that I cant think of anything, and I dont think there'll be any huge changes or that we'll start doing anything too differently... Other than arranging our recording time a lot better, and to maybe not have all of our equipment borrowed and then broken, lost or somehow fucked on such a regular and expensive basis. How would you describe your sound to the uniniated? Ive listened to shit-all music compared to most people and almost completely ignorant to any of the terms people use so this isnt something I can answer too well. In terms of similar bands I suppose at times we're comparable to Jawbreaker and Leatherface in some respects, with raspy vocals. Guitar driven songs with a negative-sour-melodic tone to our songs. I was right Im pretty shit at this. Maybe Paul can answer this better... Paul: I guess we’re just doing our best to be a punk band in the more pure sense of the term. That is, we’re trying to do something different (mohawks and crust have nothing do with punk anymore, thats just about being generic). Specifically we’re reacting against all the shitty music we see out there and provide an interesting and accessible alternative for people that dont want to leap into the realms of experimental music. While doing that though, we do pay homage to the stuff that we are digging. Curiously, hardly any of that is from our contemporaries. Jawbreaker is probably our best reference point, but we dont sound that much like them. But, yeah, melodic punk without the sugar is what we sound like. Unconsciously or not, there is definitely an indie influence creeping in at times. I can hear Superchunk and even Archers Of Loaf in our stuff at times. That probably stems from the jangly guitar. The reality is though, we – well maybe not Lynch – listen to so much different stuff that it hopefully comes out sounding like not much else. Shortty and I used to talk about how we wanted to continue the trajectory of all the great stuff that happened up until the mid 90s and then seemed to die in the arse with all the shit that was produced thereafter. So if you, the uninitiated reader, like that stuff, then you might like us. But drawing comparisons is kind of retarded. Come see us play. You might like us and you might not. That doesnt have much to do with what bands we think we sound like. For what its worth, I like us. And I have impeccable taste in music. Do you have any particular aims in mind when you write a song? Are there certain things you try to avoid? Avoiding a set formula is something that Ive always tried and avoid, but if its going to sound good, then Im going to use it and not give a fuck, which is sort ironic, seeing as how predictable this start to this answer might be. Recently its things like not putting vocal parts in or continuing them on through parts even though they might be expected to do so... If the song is good enough or interesting enough, I figure it shouldnt even need vocals. They can make everything a bit more layered and give the song more direction, but overall I kind of find they eventually become cheap, over-used and tend to end up as some sort of emotional middleman so that everyone listening can think they've got something to relate to. Songs dont have to be about shit so why make up some pointless words which mean nothing. The other day I was thinking about how all our songs have an intro, so I made it a point to remember to not have an intro for whatever song we work on next. If I notice even the slightest repetition it really makes songs boring to me, so thats probably one of the biggest things I have to make sure doesnt happen. Apart from not being repetitive, every song has to sound really good in some way, and sound good on just guitar to even bother trying to make it work as a song. If something only sounds alright, then its going to take a lot of convincing, or a really good bass/drum idea for me to bother with the song idea, just because I cant be fucked working on average songs. Id rather have a couple of really good songs than a collection of forgettable average ones. Sometimes Ill have a song written from start to finish and hardly anything is changed at all, but usually Ill have some riffs or unfinished parts of songs and if we play them and it doesnt work straight away, we move on to something new, and if it sounds like its going to work then Shortty and Paul add parts until the song comes together. As a drummer, Shortty hasnt been playing drums for long at all and hasnt had many lessons apart from a couple when we first started, so he was learning pretty much from scratch and it works really well, all the stuff he comes up with is pretty unique and has heaps of changes. More or less it comes down to not repeating parts too often, or sounding too much like other songs. Obviously parts are going to repeat somehow and theres always going to be similarities to other music, but as long as it doesnt end up boring or totally derivative then it isnt a problem. But, in writing a song the worst thing I could do, would be to start playing that four chord pop punk riff [C / G / A / F]. It never seems to fucking die out and disappear like it should. Its a pandemic virus. H5N1. Blink182 use it in that M&Ms song, in 90% of their other songs, in ALL of their albums. Millencollin use it. That Veronicas song '4Ever' uses it. All these bands playing the same pop-STD shit and hoping no-ones noticing. Just by not using these four chords is a good rule to start writing any song. If, for some anyone reading is this and it just so happens that you use those chords in the aforementioned manner in your band, then I can only hope that either : You get played on SoFresh and VideoHits constantly and climb to #1 on the charts and inspire every single viewer to never write, sing or even ever think about using the most rehashed idea since primitive apes started hitting sticks together. Or alternatively, you quit music without anyone ever noticing you played that degenerative riff. Just like you weren't thinking when you thought you had an original idea, no-one was thinking or listening when they heard whatever boring junk you were flogging as music. [/end rant] I read your mini-bio on your myspace page, seems like the band has had a bit of trouble keeping members in the country... how do you guys fare when you're without members? Have you ever purposely 'laid low' or is it all just bad timing? Someone has to be missing from the country at all times. Its our way of guaranteeing ourselves an excuse for not having done more over the last 2 years. At the moment our excuse is that Shortty is in Mexico for 6 months. Before that it was Paul was in Europe for six months. Shortty gets back in a couple of weeks so in order to make sure we dont run out of excuses I might have to check into drug rehab for 6 months or change my shifts at work to make them even more fucked up and clash even more with all possible shows and practices. The last email I got from Shortty mentioned how he was building sustainable mud huts and installing broadband connections to try improve the shockingly low accessibility to the internet in developing South America. Of course what all this traveling doesnt do is make us come across any less elitist, exclusive or pretentious. It isnt bad timing, everyone just does what they want regardless of the band because it really doesnt matter, the band will still be around whenever anyone gets back. Also we dont make ourselves totally inaccessible by not playing shows 364 days of the year on purpose. A huge part of the reason for this is the hours I work which makes getting time off work to play shows on Saturday nights difficult, seeing as I only ever get a couple of days notice and therefore can fix my shifts. When someone is away, we dont really do that much. Probably just enough to keep everything going, writing songs or enjoying not having to get to practices. We dont lay low, we just get lazy. By the way, how accurate is the mini-bio on your myspace? Should people be approaching Lynch for all their amphetamine needs? Ive been thinking a lot about how I should answer this question. Last year I ended up in court on 4 occasions and Im in no hurry to end up back there again. That being said.. Nothing is ever completely accurate and the bio certainly isnt completely accurate. In order to make it more so, it should say guitar-amp instead of guitar. It should also be known that the money I bought all the band equipment with was clean money from honest employment, and money I paid taxes on. That revenue was totally legal and totally above board. However, things I dont need, and have enjoyed the absence of since Brand-Disloyalty started are situations where Im dealing with cunts waiting outside my house with metal poles or finding out about plans involving me getting stabbed, and thats the way I prefer it. Money makes shit happen and a lot of fucked up shit happened between Brand Loyalty ending and Brand(Dis)Loyalty starting. It was sort of like a movie, but when bad shit happened, it happened for real. The band started with a different lineup, what happened to Shogun and Ari? I covered most of this question in my first answer Luke! If this were a face to face interview then people might start questioning your short term memory, but its luckily it is not, so that may be a relief to you that it isnt. Shogun and Ari got over the fight pretty quickly, and later started Baltic - I seriously dont know anyone who can play stuff like those guys can, they're all really fucking good at what they do. Is it true that you guys won't play pubs? If so, what is the reasoning behind this? Sort of... In some situations we would play pubs, but so far that hasn't ever happened. If we we're able to play with Leatherface when they came out then I’m sure we would be able let it slip that one time. But the reigning Monarchs had a hold of them and now only the Royal entertainment conglomerate is allowed to play Frankie Stubbs related events, including solo shows. Our first shows were just backyards, and people’s houses. Shows like these are the total opposite to any pub show. No tickets, No door charges, No shit DJ, No light shows, No asshole PA guy and No dealing with the restrictions of the fuckwits who manages the pub shows or the zeal of the other fuckwits generally employed there. It’s all part of providing a supply to a demand. That is, SUPPLYING an expensive night out, trapped in a smoke filled room to the DEMAND of the robot 'punters' and locals, whose strict and loyal attendance is solely in order to repetitively move their arms up towards their mouths and then back down towards a coaster over and over again. At house shows bands don’t ever have to stick to their allocated time slots and never have to ask permission for their last song from some jerk organiser. Shows shouldn't be played in pubs, if only for the reason that: They will always make out like they're supporting live music and are reliable regular venue week after week..... Until, that is the time that type of music isn't profitable any longer. (Clause 486 Section A: Pub Show Organisers Act 1986). Or something bad (aka unprofitable) happens. And right away its all snatched away and transformed into a new pub without that unprofitable type of music the crowd it drags along. New pub meaning the same old bar as before, the same seats as before, same stools same tables, same crap stage placed as to maximise the area of the bar facing the patrons. Everything the same except your bands aren't there any more, and that now there’s some shitty curtains for the stage that weren't there before replacing the ones that got damaged before things changed. Why give anyone that control. Having your outlets controlled by someone who conveniently happens to own the space you use, is making money out of your use of that space, and doesn't give a shit anything apart from dollar figures, is a not a good thing. Also, if we played pubs and there wouldn't be anecdotes like this in your zine to jump to. Paul: A guy from the Empire called all excited about offering us a slot for a show (on Luke and Ryan from Stereo City's recommendation). He seemed to think we'd be totally into it. I just said, "Nah, we don’t play in pubs." He was silent for a while, "What do you mean?" "We just don’t play in pubs. It isn't our thing." Silence. "Oh. Okay. Um, yeah. Okay". And that was it. He was totally dumbfounded and confused. It was a lot funnier than it sounds. I just don’t like the commodification of entertainment like ours. I mean, fuck, it isn't really even entertainment if its punk rock. As wanky as it sounds, it is above that. Or at least that's how I see it. Also, pub shows stifle creativity. The owners and promoters are really concerned with ensuring that bands toe the line and will bring the people. This can only lead to homogenisation. Anything different or super-creative is likely to be shunned. Another thing about pubs is that there’s no feeling of community in a pub. You go to a house show or a warehouse show and there is a much more relaxed and community-like vibe. All that said, I’ve played in other bands where I’ve played in pubs and I probably will in the future. I just don’t want to with this band unless it is essential (like on tour where we don’t have much control) *Lynch: But what about our big breakthrough Paul? How the fuck are we "going to make it big?". *Paul: *Lynch: Fine, throw away all our chances of success. *(This part of the conversation may or may not have actually occurred) Do you guys find it hard to gain any momentum or find an audience of people to fully appreciate when so many factors have gone against you? (EG. Members leaving, not playing pubs, lack of All-Ages venues in Sydney [or anywhere]) Yeah, between all the traveling and my work schedule there isn't much chance to play as much as we would really like. It does start messing up our momentum, whatever that is or may be. When everythings going right so much more gets done, more songs get written and the chore element of being in a band just isn't there. Also, it takes a while to get back into things after our numerous, frequent hibernation periods. I would never say things have ever gone against us, or that we're not fully appreciated at all... Actually its been surprising to see how much we have done, and how well received we've been straight from the start. The only thing going against us is my motherfucking gold-digger of an amp. It’s an Ampeg VL-1002 and its crucial to the sound of the band. The fucked up part is that it’s constantly breaking and blowing power tubes. I've spent way more money repairing that thing than it cost me to buy to start with. But I keep on paying for it because there just isn't any other amp I can afford which sounds anywhere close to this thing. Basically it goes through a set of power tubes every 3 months. Thats around $800 a year, or more. I hate thinking about how much of my money this amp takes and has taken, and how no one can seem fix it. I even got a mod from the guy who designed it and that still didnt work, its just another expense on the long list of repairs. In terms of shows and not playing pubs, we're going to try and start playing more often... There has never been any shortage of offers for non-pub shows, so not playing pubs isnt even a factor. If my work wasnt so shit we would be playing shows far more often and Im going to try to arrange a more flexible roster so that the balance of interstate shows to NSW shows will finally turn in favour of the NSW side. Im pretty sure there will be another show in Sydney park because thats exactly the type of show I want to always play... It doesnt only have to be the Punks Picnic that happens at Sydney park, anyone can put a show on there, all it takes is someone bothered enough to make the effort to organise it. If Shaun puts another show on again soon, Im hoping well get asked to play. (If your reading this, promise BLoyalty will help out with equipment etc!!). Everyone loves This 'Machine Kills Jerks', how many comps has it ended up on now? How did you feel when this one song was singled out over the others? (EG. By being chosen for comps) Its one of the first songs that I had had half written when Paul joined the band, and I remember him saying that if I keep writing songs like this, it would only be a matter of time before we would be everyones favourite band. Maybe he should have said everyones favourite song. We decided to put it as the first song on the demo because of how well it turned out, but its never been my favourite track, and I didnt really expect as much focus it ended up getting.. After a while it was starting to get mentioned on the internet forums by other people and it started to get out of control. Every couple of weeks Id tell Shortty and Paul who had requested the song for their compilation. It also started being the only song that was played on the (community) radio shows, but part of that was to do with the demo being on tape and too hard to cue on-air. Im just guessing, but I think its on something like 5 comps, but I could be wrong... Maybe its on 4 comps and theres a different song on another comp. I dont know if thats a lot or not. I suppose it is, seeing as we dont really bother at all trying to get any exposure. After a while it sort of started to irritate me on how it was being singled out, I wanted other songs on the demo to get at least some attention, and whenever we played it, it started to feel like some sort of stupid hit single. Its so old now that its starting to get boring to play, but I still thinks its a really well written song. Its definitely the first good song we wrote and the first song where we all contributed equally to get it written, so I guess its sort of special in that way. Oddly enough, I can even remember the days we worked on it quite clearly considering how fucked my memory usually is. I loved your zine Lynch, any plans to do a followup? Will it be a split with Dave's zine again? Yeah theres going to be another one in the very near future. Im putting everything together for it now, but I still have heaps of stories I have to think up endings for in order to be finished, and that could take a while or lot of motivational narcotics. The old zine is still available and I cant believe how many of them still keep selling now after fuck knows how long. I just find it really strange that people just keep buying it. Ive noticed at least one zine which has sections with similar writing to mine with disclaimers and subscripts, which might be an influence from reading my stories. If it isnt an influence from anything Ive written, then Ill just live in my delusional ideals where Im a influential pioneer in that style. Ive kind of switched between my zine style writing and serious answers on and off throughout these answers to try and make them different from most other interviews, so if I guess if you want to read more of the dumb shit I think, then try and find the Go.Get.Fucked/ Piss Throw Zine from Paint it Black or Gato-Loco distro. The next zine will have more fake/real celebrity obituaries, similar style rants with vague life comparisons and reflections, a total omission of vegan recipes, and heaps of shit about animals, religion and behaviour. Stuff like how Noah was some guy everyone pretended to like, because he was a rich cunt with a big boat. I talked to Dave the other day and hes going to start writing up his section for the new zine, so its more than likely going to be a split again, except I think Daves section will be different from what he did last time. Tell me about your upcoming 7inch, what tracks are on it and when do you hope to have it for release? Its being released by Appliances & Cars, but we havent even given Tom all the mixes. In usual Brand-Disloyalty style its coming together at our excruciatingly-painful slow pace. I just listened to the "final mix" while writing this, and realised that that it really needs to mixed again in a couple of parts. We were supposed to have all this sorted out and finished such a long time ago, but for some reason we've gone from being able to record and mix six songs in one day, to not even finishing mixing four songs in 8 months. Tom always seems really optimistic despite the fact we never seem to be able to give him any recordings. I guess now we'll have to tell him the same thing he gets told every three months -- Sorry Tom, but theres still some problems with the mixes and its going to take a bit longer. Any plans to tour? Nah... Not at the moment, I think it would be for the best if Paul and I wait for Shortty to at least get back in the same country as us before we start arranging a tour and a whole heap of interstate shows. Thanks heaps Lynch, hope none of the questions are too rude or anything, answer in as much detail as you like. As much as I like?... Well, at the moment this unedited interviews page is count is at 11, which along with being just plain fucking excessive, borders on a complete zine-hijack. MARCH 2006............................................................................................... Well everyones back in the same country and the mixes are ready to be mastered for the 7" coming up. The Enmore road show for Wills photo exibition is this weekend and hopefully we can start playing shows more often. If it happens it happens. If it doesnt it doesnt. Either way we'll either be playing more often or writing more songs. Or both. Or neither. +++ New Brand Loyalty interview in the latest issue of Cane Toad Warrior Zine. ***************************************************************** NOVEMBER..22.. 2005 .................................................................................. Less than a week ago Shortty jumped on a plane to head overseas to Mexcio and South America, this leaves myself and Paul to finish the details on the 7" we have been working on over the last 5 months. Songs have been recorded and mixed, and we're hopefull that everything will be ready upon shorttys return......................................................................................................... ***************************************************************** JULY 13 2004................................................................................................ The first incarnation of Brand Loyalty began in the early months of 2000. I guess we were attempting to write fastcore songs with some reflective melodic guitar parts. I think I was a big enough dork back then to proudly proclaim that we were an 'emoviolence' band...whatever, we broke up in june which happened to be a week beforeour first show, opening for code 13 at hornsby. This happened after a disagreement between Ari and Shogun which started and finishedwith shogun bouncing his guitar into Ari's head and Ari yelling 'Get the fuck out of my house and don't come back'... yep, we were that type of band, Soon after shogun began jamming in what became known as DotDotDot, Ari joined ThreeFoundDead and Lynch....? Well he kind of drifted off and focused on skating and d@^&%! a#&*#&s. Fast forward three and a bit years later. AFter returning from Europe with HeadlessHorsemen, I began jamming with lynch again with the initial intention of writing some trashy Ramones/Meanies inspired tunes. I had only been playing drums a month or so and had trouble even contemplating what I was doing. Blessed with Mr Lynch's accumulated mini-fortune gained from selling said @&^!%@@ he was able to acquire a brand new drum kit, guitar and guitar amp. Life was swell. I asked Paul to play bass for us at the last HxH show because I love him to death and always wanted us to make noise together. It started to feel like a band. Now we verge closer to the present. This year I got my heart broken, Paul got married and Lynch got the shingles. The songs started to matieralize and we played a few backyards and basements. These six little ditties were frantically recorded last friday becuase Paul leaves for Europe in just under two days for the next six months. Upon his return we hope to continue to NOT bring the mosh at a basement or street corner near you. From Shortty (da nostalgia peddler).
