All'inizio degli anni '70
ero un ragazzo secco come un chiodo, con una gran testa di capelli
ricci... ero diplomato in violino al conservatorio di Genova e suonavo
la chitarra alle sfilate di moda, con un improbabile look da paggio
rinascimentale. A Milano frequentavo la Facoltà di Filosofia alla
Statale di Milano, e lì incontrai Luisa. Lei scriveva poesie, io
componevo musica... ci completavamo a vicenda.
Così naquero le mie prime canzoni e la nostra pubblicità: per quello che
ho cercato di rubare alla vita, lei mi ha sempre tenuto il sacco. Il mio
primo progetto discografico non vide mai la luce, nonostante contenesse
già delle canzoni che fecero poi la mia fortuna, una per tutte
"Confessioni di un malandrino
A vent'anni, com'è giusto
che sia, molto spesso in me il cuore aveva la meglio sulla ragione e
così, nelle lunghe ore che passavo al bar della mia casa discografica,
in attesa che qualcuno là in alto si ricordasse di me, presi una
decisione: la persona giusta per me era Paul Buckmaster. Paul in quel
momento era il più grande e non solo per me; era l'arrangiatore che
aveva inventato il suono del primo Elton John, stravolgendo in senso
ritmico l'uso degli archi.
Mi procurai l'annuario di Billboard, trovai il contatto, gli scrissi e
lui venne a Milano. Così... semplicemente perchè aveva "sentito" che io
ero "dotato"e che lui doveva venire da me... quasta fu la sua sola
motivazione e la mia fortuna. Ovviamente la presenza di Paul mi spalancò
ogni porta e la mia carriera ebbe inizio.
E dopo Paul venne Maurizio... Maurizio Fabrizio è stato per la mia
musica il compagno più importante: ha arrangiato i miei dischi "storici"
e, in varie riprese, ha suonato con me sui palchi di tutta Europa. Io
non amo in modo particolare la chitarra, ma il mio "accrocchio" con lui
è perfetto: musicalmente parlando, Maurizio è l'altra metà della mia
mela.
Una sera a Roma mi venne a cercare Dori Zard e mi presentò in seguito a
suo fratello Davide. I fratelli Zard, con la loro grande famiglia,
produssero i miei concerti più grandiosi: dalla "Fete dell'Humanitè",
200.000 spettatori a Parigi nel 1979, alla "Carovana del Mediterraneo"
del 1980. Con loro ho girato in lungo e in largo e con grande successo
tutta l'Europa, ponendo le basi per quella che è ancora oggi la mia
attività al di fuori dell'Italia.
In quegli anni, per tradurre ed adattare i miei testi, venne da Londra
Peter Sinfield dei King Krimson, "very british", colto e raffinato. E da
Parigi venne Etienne Roda-Gil, guascone, grande e grosso, sempre
esagerato... purtroppo non c'è più... e mi manca.
Nel 1983 cominciai a lavorare per il cinema e così incontrai Luigi
Magni, grande regista e grande esperto della Roma dei tempi andati. Gigi
mi ha insegnato come si lavora ad una colonna sonora e lo ha fatto così
bene che con lui ho vinto, in un colpo solo, il "David di Donatello" ed
il "Nastro d'argento".
Poi, sempre lavorando per il cinema, Michael Ende, il sognatore di
"Momo" e della "Storia infinita", e poi il grande maestro Ennio
Morricone che mi ha fatto l'onore di scrivere per me la musica del
"Salmo" e di volermi in concerto con lui... e poi... e poi... Faletti,
Giorgio, che per me ha scritto testi e poi è diventato l'amico al quale
voglio bene, così da fargli da cavia per l'anteprima dei suoi libri.
Ora leggo la mia vita come un viaggio... un viaggio su di un treno che
ancora sta correndo. Su questo treno io sono salito al volo, ormai oltre
trent'anni fa... ad ogni fermata qualcuno è salito, ha percorso un
tratto di strada con me e poi... è sceso. In questi anni sono stati
molti i compagni di viaggio: qualcuno forse risalirà, qualche fermata
più in là. Qualcuno non lo rivedrò più... purtroppo o, a volte, per
fortuna. Non tutti sono buoni compagni. Comunque sia io, da solo o in
compagnia, continuo ad andare perchè, come dicono i veri viaggiatori,
quelli con poco bagaglio ed il taccuino sempre in mano, l'importante non
è la meta: quello che conta è il viaggio, perchè è lì che tutto succede.
In the early 70's I was a very thin guy, with a huge bunch of curly
hair. I had graduated in violin at the Genova Conservatoire and used to
play the guitar for fashion shows, wearing an unlikely Renaissance
pageboy look. Meanwhile, I was attending Philosophy at Milan's State
University and there I met Luisa. She wrote poetries. I composed music:
a perfect pair.
This way, my first songs saw the light and so did our complicity: for
anything I've tries to steal to life, she's always been my accompliance.
My first music project has never seen the light, though it contained
some of the songs that made my fortune soon after, one for all

When I was 20 years old,
as it should be, my heart usually won on the reason and so, during the
endless hours I used to spend by my record company bar, waiting for some
of the directors to remember me, I took a decision: the right person to
help me was Paul Buckmaster. At the time, Paul was the greatest not just
for me: he was the arranger who invented the early Elton John sound,
distorting the use of strings in a rhythmical meaning.
I obtained a copy of the Billboard Yearbook, found a contact, wrote him
a letter and he came to see me in Milan. So. simply because, by
regarding my letter, he “felt” that I was gifted and that he had to
come and see me. this was his motivation and my fortune.
Obviously, Paul's presence opened every door and my career took off.
After Paul, Maurizio came. Maurizio Fabrizio has been for me the most
important mate: arranged my historical records and, most often, played
with me on stage all over Europe. I do not particularly love the guitar,
as an instrument, but the “melting point” with him was perfect, as ,
musically talking, Maurizio is the other half of my apple.
One night, in Rome, Dori Zard looked for me and soon after introduced me
to her brother Davide.
The Zard brothers, and their great family, produced the most memorable
among my concerts: from the “Fete dell'Humanité” in Paris, in front of
200.000 people in 1979, to the “Carovana del Mediterraneo” in 1980; with
them, I've been successfully touring Europe from side to side, building
the foundations on which is still steadily moving my activity out of
Italy.
On those years, to translate and adapt my lyrics, Pete Sinfiled of King
Crimson came from London, , “very British”, learned and refined. And
from Paris came Etienne Roda-Gil, gascon, big and huge, always
overstated. unfortunately he is no more among us. and I miss him.
In 1983 I started to work on movie soundtracks and met with Luigi Magni,
a great film director and great expert of the long gone Rome.. Gigi
taught me how to work on a movie soundtrack and he did it so well that,
with him, I won in just one blow both the “David di Donatello” and the
“Nastro d'argento”, both top Italian movie's awards.
Then, always working for movie business, I met Michael Ende, the “Momo”
and “The neverending story” dreamer, and Ennio Morricone, who honoured
me by writing for me the music of the “Salmo” and by asking me to join
him live.
And then. and then. Faletti, Giorgio, who wrote some lyrics for me and
then became a friend of mine, such a friend to become his guinea on
every new book he writes.
Now I'm reading my life as a trip. a trip on a train that is still
running. I took this train as it was flying past, 30 years ago now. on
each stop somebody was boarding, riding a few stops with me and then.
was off. During these years I had many travel mates: maybe some of them
will join me on board again, maybe a few stops to come. Some other, I
won't see anymore. unfortunately or, sometimes, fortunately. Not all of
them were good travel mates. Anyway, whatever will be, alone or
accompanied, I will still go on, because, as the real travellers, those
with a light baggage and a notebook always at hand say “the most
important thing is not the destination, but the travel itself, as
everything happens meanwhile".
