When Branduin tells you she’s self taught, she isn’t bragging. “It’s an apology, actually. Like, don’t look at me, I’m self taught! I don’t know what I’m doing.”
That isn’t exactly true. The young singer/songwriter knows more about her craft than anyone would expect a sixteen-year-old to know. She doesn’t scream expert either. From baggy sweater to slightly unkempt hair, there is very little about her that would suggest she is more than your average San Francisco teen, but underneath it all is two years of a surprising history.
In 2006, Branduin had a chance encounter with singer/songwriter Anna Nalick that would change everything. “I didn’t play music. I wasn’t a musician. I didn’t know anything about music. So its not like I went into this expecting anything.” ‘This’ was a concert in Vallejo where Branduin had the chance to meet the artist after the show. “I didn’t think about what I was going to say. Which I guess was my biggest mistake. Now…I always make sure I know what I’m going to say. Otherwise crazy things happen. You know, like being handed a dream you never knew you wanted.”
She may not have known she wanted the dream, but the rest of us are glad she found it. Branduin is a master of haunting melodies and lyrics that will circle your head for days. Her repertoire covers a dozen songs from the country feel of ‘Save You’ and ‘No More’ to sharper songs like ‘Who You Are Now’ and ‘Doing Alright.’ After graduating from Grammy Camp in 2008 she says she intends to start playing more regularly in the San Francisco area, and that we can even expect a release from her within the next couple of months. “Demo? EP? I don’t know what you call them. Cute little six track thing. Keep your eyes open.” Whether she’s releasing demos, EPs, or full length albums, we will all be keeping our eyes open for this young star in the making.
The song is really amazing. I remember you saying something about not being happy with the recording, and I'm not sure if it was this song you were talking about, but I love it.
Love the song! You've got talent and don't let anyone tell you differently. Hope to meet you someday and if you ever wanna do a house show in Portland, you let me know!
