Brant grew up with a strong musical background, however unaccepted by him. His mother, a pianist, often would be found playing her upright piano or teaching lessons. His father, a guitarist, bass player, and peddle steel guitar player, played in a country western band and also played with his parents in a country gospel band. Between Beethoven, Keith Green, and Alabama, Brant learned to respect many different types of music.
He started to appreciate the music around him, but was very insecure with his own voice and talents. In elementary school, he saw that music was not a popular endeavor and began to distance himself from it more and more. His disassociation with music lasted from elementary school through most of High School.
His father's guitar was stolen at his brother's wedding announcement party his senior year of High School, and shortly thereafter his father purchased a new one. Brant recalls, "When he brought it home I knew something different was about to happen to my life. Not only was it beautiful, but it also sounded amazing." He had to learn to play it. His father gave him his first lesson, how to play G, C, and D, followed by a second in how to read a chord chart. With that he was sent out to find his own musical path and direction.
It was shortly thereafter that he came in contact with the first Christian band that he felt to be credible and good enough lyrically and musically to be as good as a secular band. They showed him a style of acoustic driven music that was intelligent and still had a strong beat. The lyrics found in the songs recorded by this band touched him so deeply that eventually they drove him into a life focused on God. He found comfort knowing that the struggles that he was going through in his walk with God were not necessarily unusual, as other believers were going through similar struggles.
Brant finished his freshman album, titled, "Goin' Home" in 2006. Simple, and beautiful the lyrics reflect that sandals off approach to God that he lives. Some artists you never get to know until you actually meet them, but in his case you will come to know him as you listen to his lyrics. But what he really strives for in his music, is that you come to know yourself and Christ, through words that are reflected in us all.
Brant will be heading back into the studio this summer to record his next album. He is hoping to have it completed by the Spring of 2008. Please take the time to check out this up and coming artist and to get a chance to know the heart and the passion that God has given him.
