SWEET WHISPERS FROM THE BEDROOM, BRAZEN BEDLAM ONSTAGE
Brass Bed began as a simple bedroom recording project between singer/songwriter Christiaan Mader, drummer Peter DeHart, and guitarist Jonny Campos. In 2007, they entered the studio with nothing more than a handful of home demos and strange ideas, and ended up crafting Midnight Matinee: a warm, welcoming record featuring a diverse collection of catchy pop, toe-tapping rock and roll, and heartfelt crooners, garnished with the occasional horn arrangement and vibraphone accompaniment. After recruiting multi instrumentalist Jacques Doucet and pianist Andrew Toups, Brass Bed's expanded lineup transformed the elaborate studio compositions of Midnight Matinee into an explosive and unpredictable live show.
Bolstering their traditional drums-guitar-bass lineup with a dizzying array of effects, percussion, pedal steel, stacks of keyboards and synthesizers, Brass Bed mutates the familiar sounds of pop music into outlandish and often unexpected shapes. Taking as much influence from The Beatles and The Kinks as The Flaming Lips and Elephant 6, their songs channel the soul of 60's and 70's rock through modern indie psychedelia.
The band spent 2008 aggressively touring in support of Midnight Matinee, and after a year of enthralling both noisy dive bars and festival crowds at CMJ, The Voodoo Music Experience, and Festival International, Brass Bed has earned a reputation as one of the South's loudest and most dynamic indie bands.
Brass Bed has returned to the bedroom to work out a new set of innovative pop miniatures, and will enter the studio again in 2009 to record their eagerly-anticipated sophomore album. For now, though, let your ears feast upon the humble majesty of Midnight Matinee, and dream of what may come next.
SWOONING CRITICS WAX PHILOSOPHICAL FOR MIDNIGHT MATINEE
“Midnight Matinee is bursting with sunshiny California-style pop. Part Byrds, part Brian Wilson and part Flaming Lips, Brass Bed’s skillfully produced strata of psychedelia, Laurel Canyon country, doo-wop harmonies and light prog-rock brushstrokes seem almost too complex to be so effervescent.”
–Gambit Weekly
"Midnight Matinee" exudes that dreamy rock charm that only comes from nights spent listening to Pet Sounds with Fleetwood Mac in a Laurel Canyon bungalow with a backpack full of drugs in 1976." [emphasis added]
-Steve Latrell, Podflash.net
“...Midnight Matinee is a kaleidoscope of orchestral flourishes, psych-pop contagiousness, fuzzed-out rock, wilting country winks, and even the occasional detour into noise. It’s an ADHD modus operandi that probably shouldn’t work, but thanks to watertight songwriting, is miraculously cohesive.”
-Flagpole
"Midnight Matinee is full of exuberant indie-pop tunes that take some of the spacey and rocking moments of earlier Wilco records and ditch the country influences in favor of soaring pop hooks a la James Mercer of the Shins... In the end, Midnight Matinee ends up something like a well-attended benefit show: fun you can feel good about."
-Bradley Occhipinti, Have You Heard?
"Midnight Matinee is a record that’s as nostalgic as it is forward looking... one that effortlessly crosses genres, weaving together tales and anecdotes of lives and loves. "
-Daniel Tham, I'm Waking Up To
BLOSSOMING PLUMES OF ADMIRATION, PASSION, ADORATION, UNSOLICITED MARRIAGE PROPOSALS, ET CETERA
"Playing organic indie-pop that's grabby, earthy and intelligent, Brass Bed spices its psychedelic sounds with country nods like pedal steel, resulting in a compellingly distinctive assembly of instrumentation that dutifully serves each song."
-Wade Tantangelo, Creative Loafing
"One second they were on a doo-wop and early R&B kick and the next they sounded like the Band, but it was all kick-ass."
-Jason Songe, Anti-Gravity Magazine
"A winning confluence of effervescent indie rock, quirky psych-pop, country and even a couple of moments of noise. Imagine one of the Elephant 6 bands, only powered with more rock juice and draped in some pedal steel."
-Bao Le-Huu, Orlando Weekly
