If the rising price of wheat (up 70% since January) isn't on your list of issues to follow, it should be. Many are concerned we could see a repeat of the 2007-2008 global food crisis. Last week, riots over a 30% increase in bread prices killed 10 and injured 443 in Maputo, Mozambique.

We are at a pivot point. The global recession and high grain prices caused a disturbing surge in hunger and poverty in the United States and worldwide. Continuing economic problems, the world’s growing demand for food, and climate change could make this surge in hunger permanent.

We’re working on some improvements to our website, www.bread.org, and we want your input! How can we better communicate important news to you when we need to contact Congress?

Read this article by Senator Lugar (R-IN) on why we need to pass the child nutrition bill. Then help us make sure it happens: Share this with your friends and call your senators at 1-800-326-4941 to tell them that you agree with Senator Lugar.

About me:

Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Find out more at bread.org

Who I'd like to meet:

Bread for the World is looking for members who want to help make a difference in the lives of poor and hungry people. Each of Bread for the World's members has their own story about their involvement in the anti-hunger movement. As individuals, we may volunteer in social ministries and give to our churches' hunger appeals. But we also know that a single decision by Congress or the president can outweigh or multiply our contributions.
