BREAKER: In trucker terminology, a rogue radio transmission that hacks into public bandwidth, screams out its message, before once again disappearing into static.
Unusually, when Midlands-based 3 piece rock band Breaker first formed, they decided to write and record an EP before they started playing live, in order to truly define their sound before going public. Their home recordings caught the attention of renowned producer Gavin Monaghan,(Nizlopi, The Editors, The Clash, The Cure) so the tracks were laid down at his Wolverhampton studio. As a promo disc it got great feedback from the industry and hence got its first air play on BBC West Midlands’ Drive-Time show, the day before their first ever live show at Birmingham Barfly! They were also interviewed on the show about their decision to do things this way round, and on the effect of the internet on self-promotion for the unsigned bands of today.
The band went on to receive further air time on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, and were asked back to BBC WM for another interview and a live acoustic session. Later, that same EP was described as “The perfect demo” by the panel of industry gurus on the Demo Jury at the NEC’s annual international Music Live exhibition. It then travelled to Europe, where it received a lot of attention at Popkomm, an industry-only showcase and trade show in Berlin. It even got a spin at the after-show party at the British Embassy!
After a run of hugely successful live shows, Breaker went back into the studio to record their own souped-up rendition of the classic rock track ‘Radar Love’ from Dutch band Golden Earring, which had proved hugely popular at their live shows. Again Gavin Monaghan worked his magic and the track came out fantastically well. So much so that it has found it’s way back to it’s homeland Holland and is due to appear on a compilation album made entirely of cover versions of the track, featuring such artists as U2, Bryan Adams, REM and Def Leppard.
Having toured extensively around the UK, the band have been amazed by the response. Following their beliefs in the power of self-promotion and the Unsigned Scene, Breaker have just returned from recording their debut full-length album with EMI veteran producer Chris Tsangerides (Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest) after he heard their tunes on MySpace. With contacts at iTunes already established, the band have high hopes for their future release and are making plans for a Summer release and promotional tour, taking in the UK and Europe.
Despite the importance of their recordings, Breaker’s live show is where their heart is, where every show is different, and all ages and tastes are catered for. Their fan-base ranges from age 8 to 80 as a result of their mix of modern song-writing and classic rock influences, and so far, touch wood, they haven’t had one unappreciative audience! The modern rock scene seems to be ticking along nicely, but as the boys always say, if it ain't broke, BREAK IT!
