i know that i will never be able to completely know the ones around me. nor do i expect that anyone might completely understand me. metaphor. my life--a silent space, a void: those around me a brilliant & constantly renewed life. temple-like & pungent with wisdom that does not belong to me. that makes me ache & yearn & sometimes write & also ponder joyously on a grassy sun-filled day & feel butterflies from yesterday too & this is how i constitute my awake as well as dreams.
what is the gift of art, if not the gift of sight. the
eyes open to the world and that is an enormous difficult
task. but i think that it is precisely such a gift that
births artists. for the artist must always witness the
constant movement, the countless appearances and
disappearances of the world that he's surrounded by: and he
knows that everything is worthy of a monument. to be
capable of noticing the sweet murmurings is a tremendous
gift, as it brings a lot of joy. yet, at the same time,
because open eyes are not a matter of choice, the artist is
burdened by his inability to shut out the blood of the
world's wounds. and because his eyes must always take
notice the artist is, at times, forced to contort himself
in many different ways, so that he may survive his own
witnessing.
& how else to withstand the enormity of such burden, the burden of sight, but to believe that there can only be the grace of others?

Her sound is mature, flirting with the nuances of emotion. Not sexy (that's too easy), but rather, sinful. Not melancholy but wistful. Not dark but defiant. Never happy but hopeful. If you like rainbow-trance-anthems, this DJ is not for you. Of all things, Samira is not one-size-fits-all.
...a lot of the San Fran stuff is just pumpin. DJs like Samira and Kirsten of Witches Brew have these soothing styles that take you through melodic synths to banging bass all in one mix. It's greatness!

Who's a breakbeat junkie?
Samira is a San Francisco-based breaks DJ, a Dutch-Indonesian transplant from Amsterdam, who spent her formative years listening to the sounds of the gamelan and began her life-long love affair with the piano at age 7. She discovered her voice behind the decks during a stint of writer's block, and hasn't written since. Today, best known for her relentless and bass heavy late-night sets, it is still a deep love for story-telling that remains at the root of Sam's sound.
Samira is a resident of Sister SF, the most recognized cross-genre, female DJ crew in the world. She had the pleasure of joining SEISMIC, a crew dedicated to strengthening San Francisco's breaks community.
Sam has produced and co-produced weeklies, monthlies, and one offs, hosted a 2-year-long weekly webcast on Club246, and has made appearances on FutureBreaks and Bass Pressure Radio, as well as the documentary film Vinyl Is A Girl's Best Friend (Irish Rose Films) with DJ Shortee, Annalyze, Shejay, and more. Samira has been featured in publications such Etc. Magazine, Karma Mag, REPELLENT, Womens Enews, among a number of other online publications. She has also been featured on the nightlife television show :CODEtv.
Sam has carved a niche for herself with her dark & compelling nu-skool breaks, DJing up and down the West Coast, gracing the decks as far as Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, New York, and Miami. She's played every well-known club in San Francisco, including Mighty, 1015 Folsom, Mezzanine, DNA Lounge, Club 6, and 111 Minna.
Samira has DJd alongside international breakbeat talent such as: Krafty Kuts, Future Funk Squad, BLIM, SOTEG , the Carbon Community, 10Sui, Soul of Man, Stereo8, DJ Hyper, Lee Coombs, Hi8, DJ Friendly, Boabinga, 30Hz, theIncredible Melting Man, Myagi, the Phat Conductor, Grayarea, J-Break. As well as other artists such as Andrea Parker, Miss Honey Dijon, Jondi & Spesh, Heather Heart, Reid Speed, Shortee.
