"When I first saw Citizen Kane, I was certain that I never loved a person the way I loved that film" -- Francois Truffaut
I love music; Music just gives me an indescribable pleasure. Besides music, I'm obsessed with film. I always need a book to read, and I love stories. Stories fascinate me and I think that's why I love folk music as much as I do because each ballad tells a tale.
"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music." - George Eliot
The wait is over! Thanks for checking us out and I'm glad you enjoy. Hope to see you at the 8x10 on Saturday. Remember, free tickets at Record & Tape Traders if you buy the CD. Take care.
Ahaha that made my day, thank you Paulie! <3 I was going to say he looks awfully sad to be celebrating my birthday but the fact that the hat ruined his hairstyle explains it. haha
Yes'm :D It is creepy but once again, with many of Godard's signature existential undertones and lighthearted humorous pop-culture references (a pair of professors named Heckle ad Jeckle :P). You really should finish watching it sometime soon (small cameo by your beloved Jean-Pierre Leaud towards the end!).
What's great about the American Cinemateque is it's split between two locations: one is a bit fancier (The Egyptian Theater) and the other is more no-bullshit, single screen/old timey (the Aero Theater, which is the one I went to. Bonus geekery: the Donnie Darko theater scene was filmed there).
Hahaha, I love you so much more for that. I was just talking about this the other day, about how difficult it is for me to find a friend who is able to watch pretentious art films with me (and enjoy them!), to possibly take a bullet for each other at Chico's, who will believe we won't get shot at after all thanks to my protective magical cuarzo (quartz stone), to skip Starbuck's and go to Chinatown for a pistachio float instead (and while we're there, purchase some illegal fireworks, which I forgot to do this time :( ), who will join me on my quest to find a Street Fighter II arcade game (did find the new Street Fighter arcade game at a Japanese arcade in Little Tokyo though!)! I think you're the one haha
And I Love "Day for Night"! I felt so bad for Leaud's character, though it was hilarious. Makes you yearn for the film business doesn't it? Looks like so much fun!
First off: they didn't show Breathless ;__; (they didn't have the film available) but they promised they'd show it sometime in the fall (free for those who went this time). But I DID get to see Alphaville! When the credits rolled on-screen , I swooned. Swooned like a southern belle. I don't think I can ever put to words what it was like to see a Godard film the way it was meant to be seen, to see Anna work her eyeball magic on the big-screen. Nelson's expression should sum it up:
Nothing but a bunch of pretentious film geeks in attendance. I kept making jokes like:"Ain't nobody here gettin' laid...ever." Till I was swiftly reminded I was indeed one of the said geeks. But the difference between me and them is while they had their $12 lattes, I was at Chico's Pizza in Compton. Seriously, that is the best damn pizza ever. I don't care if there's bullet holes(which happen to be perfectly aligned with my head) on the windows. Worth dying/ possibly getting into a knife fight for. Plus they've got arcades! :D
Oh my dearest darling, the fact that you loved it warms the cockles of my heart! <3 That alone is thanks enough for me. Plus I owed you one for introducing me to "The 400 Blows" :) And your review perfectly sums up all my reasons for loving it as well. He always adds those little memorable gems. I think Godard is often unfairly painted as this deeply solemn director. This film is proof he has a playful side (in fact most do, you just have to look closely. even when he's going on a Marxist rant!). Which is why it's difficult to recommend him to anyone who hasn't already been exposed to his work. Jean-Claude Brialy is indeed a dreamboat! One of my many imaginary lovers :P and yeah that was him in "The Bride Wore Black". He's also in a really cheesy made for-tv musical called simply, "Anna" with again, Anna Karina. It's got a great swanky soundtrack (by Serge Gainsbourg!) though. Also completely agree with you about Anna. All she has to do is blink and with that she makes anyone's day. Beauty AND charm, it's easy to see why Godard fell in love with her. I hate that they broke up. SO much that I never finished reading his book (remember the one on picudo desk? lol) beyond the point where their relationship is officially over cause it depresses the hell out of me. The magic is over :(
Ok I have to tell (in the next comment cause I ran out of room) why you're my cinematic soulmate. Now I know it was inevitable for you to watch Une Femme Est Une Femme, but you HAD to watch it the same weekend as I enjoyed another Godard film as well! We always do this! haha
Ooh, let me know when/if TCM posts anymore details :)
And no I haven't heard of the Alloy Orchestra (again, this is why you are my cinema-whore ;) ) but from what you've told me it does indeed sound really cool!
Haha they both involve phones and murder so I don't blame you.
Yeah Annie Hall was bitter-sweet as well. The balcony scene has to be one of my top ten favorite scenes EVER. It's too bad I didn't catch any of the references though since I saw Annie Hall before B&B :( BUT it's funny you mention it cause today I'm going to watch Bergman's Face to Face which is, as you know, the film they were going to watch in Annie Hall. Have you seen it?
!!! You are a very very lucky man to have experienced that and god yes, I would have loved it too! I notice the lack of mystery, that element of danger missing in the Hitchcock films Herrmann didn't score. Which is why I think I didn't like Dial M for Murder :/ They should do that more often with other films. Just think, JLG's films with Michel Legrand's scores...
I finally found Stolen Kisses and Bed & Board! I liked the former but loved the latter which kind of reminded me of a lighter version of Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage(similar poster as well). That was not a happy ending though, as some may believe. Antoine will never fit in/find a suitable place in society, like they said, he's still running. So it's sad to see that type of person remain in a loveless marriage(as he say's:"You are my mother, my sister, my daughter." and She say's :"I only wanted to be your wife.")Staying with her was his way of attempting to fit in and live a "normal" life. Well at least that's how I interpret it. Even though I didn't agree with the ending I did enjoy them both and am now in search of Love on the Run! :)
Oh and your mystery item finally arrived today. Your package is all wrapped up and ready to be shipped tomorrow. So keep an eye out for it as it will not fit in your mailbox. Hint: pennywhistles and moonpies :D You'll understand (I hope haha) when you receive it!
Hello Leslie Its a Pleasure to meet you!! Appreciate the Add & Checking out my Music!! Hope you have a Beautiful week!! Always Best! Peace & Love Trice :) xx
I'm so glad you watched it :D and I agree with you wholeheartedly. I cannot stop thinking about him either. There's a lovable innocent quality to him; even when he's talking about my favorite story: "Ethyl and Regular". I know! He needs to pen his own autobiography so we can get a closer look at his life. The director to the newer one, Tommy Pallotta said he will release a torrent of it within the next few weeks. can't wait!
Nice! I bet he stocked up before the death of vhs. I'll continue to look for them, I do love the thrill of the chase. I gotta hit up Chola video( I call it that cause well, they are cholas. crunchy hair, black lip liner, the works.), they've got a lot of old stuff. I bought Mean Streets(have you seen that one?) and Ed and His Dead Mother for $3 from them! But if I still don't find them within the near future than I'll definitely take you up on that offer. Thank you kindly :)
Haha I gotta see the shirt, that makes it that much cooler. Well at least you've got something to remember it by.
Yeah Del Toro's great. Gotta support the mexis. Speaking of mexis, I can't stop flipping through that wonderful book you sent me! If I ever needed to explain anything about my culture to anyone, all I got to do is show them Mexican Pulp Art. Like the book states; it reflects our attitudes about life, death, mysticism, the supernatural, and gun toting toddlers on tricycles. I love you, so much. Thanks again <3
No matter, so long as you watch it in the near future(cause youtube loves to yank off anything that's worth watching). Ooh Charade, I love the Henry Mancini intro! And that is a horrific tragedy. What else will they be showing at the doomed theater? And wait a minute, WHERE did you find Who's that Knocking at my Door!?!?!?!? Harvey is my hero. I have seen some clips of it (again, youtube) and he makes a reference to The Searchers(nicely done brother, watching them back to back ) in it and another where he's rolling around naked in bed(as usual) to "The End" by The Doors. What about Boxcar Bertha, have you seen that? That's another I can't find. Breakfast +films= the reason you are THE ultimate cinema whore <3
Hey I went to ye old video shoppe yesterday and confidently walked up to the lady at the counter and said proudly "The King of Comedy please". She say's, "oh ok here ya go sweetie" and hands me some Bernie Mac bullshit! I said "Nooo, De Niro, Scorsese. Like this!" and proceeded to act out the cover( both arms raised in the air). She said "Naw. We don't have anything like thaaat honey." :( Good news though, I found my jacket! Sewed on the patches yesterday. Done deal. Yay! :D Oh and finally got to watch Let the Right One In, been dying to see and then George reminded me of it and said I better watch it so she can have someone to discuss it with. I gladly obliged.
We are and I love you for having a mini Marty film fest. MEAN STREETS!!! <333 If I could marry that movie, I would. Here's another for you: American Boy. I've been searching for it for years. It's extremely rare. I saw it on amazon for 500 bucks! (included with a short and another documentary). Then two weeks ago I found it on youtube. Holy mother, I LOVE Steven Prince. It's just basically him on a couch telling all these random/interesting stories about his life. Back in march a new one "American Prince" was released(with bits of the original). It's sort of an update on his life now. I saw a bootleg of it. But man I love the guy. He comes across as the best friend you can talk to about anything. You just want to have him over for a sleepover, braid his hair, and ask him how his day went. See it you mook ;) and I am just about to leave to look for The King of Comedy.
Oooh! I'm excited, curious, and a little nervous since you added a sinister looking tehehe there at the end. At any rate, thank you paulie <3 Hmm I think I know what it is... I'll let you know when I get it!
Hey and you just blew my mind. I've been on a Scorsese kick lately (more so than usual). And I swear to you as I was reading your comment I was cutting the collar off (felt like it was choking me) my new (4th) Taxi Driver shirt whilst listening to none other than the Taxi Driver theme by Bernard Herrmann (that intro is just sooo *eyes roll to back of head in a state of pure bliss*). And if that doesn't establish me as a flaming geek, check this out. I am currently constructing my own Travis Bickle jacket. I have the jump wings patch, the King Kong company patch, I even found a "we are the people" button. I even bought the exact same M-65 field jacket a couple of weeks ago online but I had to return cause it was too big :( I will continue my hunt for it this weekend. So I'm glad you gave me that rec! I know of it but never seen it. Don't know how it ever escaped me. Gotta hunt that down this weekend as well! Thanks brother :D
Hey Leslie, just dropping buy cause I haven't talked to you in ages and I wanted to know how you're going. Plus I was at the record store buying country music albums for my grandfather (I'm as rock'n'roll as ever) and I saw the best of Joan Baez and remembered how much you like her, so I got it and am going to listen to it. I’ll let you know what I think; my mum was shocked when she saw it in the bag. She likes her. Let me know how things are going, I miss your excellent opinions around BIOD. Talk soon
