About me: During my childhood, growing up 20 minutes west of Newcastle in New South Wales Australia, I was extremely fortunate to have reptiles living in my own backyard. Green Tree Frogs would often come right up to our house at night time where we would find them on the window glass feasting on insects. It was a regular occurrence to find Eastern Bearded Dragons basking on our driveway catching some midday sun. Blue Tongue Skinks could often be found soaking up some morning rays. I only remember seeing a few Red Bellied Black Snakes and they usually turned up dead, killed by a nieghbours dog. We were always warned to stay away from snakes.
A few of my mates, not knowing any better, would go searching after school in the bush trying to find and catch Beardies so they could keep them as pets. The urge to keep one for me never occured. Maybe that was because we had so many in our backyard anyway. As the years passed there seemed to be fewer and fewer turning up in our yard and it is unfortunate now that we are lucky to have 3 or 4 sightings each year.
In early 2007 I took my girl friend at the time, who is now my wife, to the Australian Reptile Park in Somersby NSW Australia (www.reptilepark.com.au). During a reptile demonstration we were presented with the oppurtunity to take a close look at and even touch a number of reptiles. This is where I first had physical contact with a snake. It was a small brightly coloured corn snake. I nervously put my hand out to touch it and I was immediately surprised that is was not slippery or slimey and that is was in fact really smooth and cool. After the demonstration we were all offered to stick around to get our picture taken with the juvinile Boa. We waitied around got our photo.
My fascination, love and respect for reptiles, since that day, has continually grown and grown. I now keep a few different species of snakes and lizards, with high aspirations to keep and study up close many, many more.
