Breed are struggling. They're appearing as special guests of Kill II This on a six band bill which is already running half an hour behind schedule and will later go spectacularly arse-shaped for the headliners when a power cut puts the mockers on their set.
These lively local thrashers nevertheless make the best of a bad situation marrying guttural vocals to extreme guitar volume. Although their frontman is clearly short of patience, his vitriolic lung power is in no way diminished.
Breed (not to be confused with Breed77) hail from the Sepultura / Soulfly stable, jarring guitars competing for space with bone-rattling drums. They prove their worth with a surprisingly authentic cover of the Seps' classic Roots Bloody Roots. They also prove their sense of humour has survived the adverse circumstances playing a note-perfect version of Britney Spears Hit Me Baby, One More Time.
Breed's own material is almost too malicious for its own good; it hurls itself at you without a moments respite. Still, the West Midlanders succeed in impressing a more than weary audience and will most certainly live to fight again.
Metal-i Review
These West Midlands guys hit a brand of thrash-funk all of their own, blending the best elements of Soulfly with Faith No More, a bit of Jane's Addiction too.
Word reaches us that despite their thunderous sound, they proved their sense of humour at a gig supporting Kill II This, amongst others, by doing a note-perfect version of Britney's "Hit Me Baby One More Time".
They sound better than many signed bands from this genre we've heard lately, and those funked-up nod-inducing beats, riffs and vocals can't be denied. Unlike most bands these days on Myspace who go "our music! gerroff!" you can actually download Breed's 4 tracks on Myspace, which we suggest you do, and play to more people, and convert them to the cause. Always good to see a Brit band that's good, always a bonus when they're this good. Despite the slightly rough sounding quality of the recordings, you'll be left wanting more. We'll keep an eye on this one.
Breed are the definitive thrash-funk band, with a sound, style and content not yet surpassed by any of their contemporaries. They have been around now for some time but to their own admission have taken some what of a sabbatical of late due to a feeling of melancholy within the scene they so love. Good news for all concerned is that they're back and boy are they!!
The bands highlights, as any follower will know, are gigs with some of the most reknowned bands out there. Testament, The Almighty, Him, Skindred, Will Haven, Anathema, Kill II This, Raging Speedhorn to name but a few coupled with releases such as the highly acclaimed ‘Contempt’. Now they are back writing and turning out new material with a real venom and are gagging to get back out there on the live circuit and in their own words ‘kick some ass!!’
They will be the first to admit they grew tired of the ever diminishing live scene and just wanted to chill out and re group so to speak. Now armed with the afore mentioned desire and a passion reinvented they really are looking to yet again ‘make ears bleed’.
To anyone reading this that has yet to be privy to a Breed gig I can say only one thing, find out where and when and get yourself there. The projection of this band at any gig has to been seen to be believed; they come across as well as any signed band I have ever seen in sound, quality, production and sheer entertainment. To quote Kerrang’s review ‘Vitriolic vocals competing for space with jarring guitars and spine crushing drums’. I will admit that review does go some way into summing up the over all Breed sound but falls sadly short of the real deal. It fails to mention the intimate and personal songs with meaning and genuine feeling, the day to day stuff that we all think about or get caught up in not stupid typical metal lyrics, grunts and screams. It misses out on the passion, the fun, the warmth of what should be a normal thrash band but ends up being a funky powerful and energetic show that a good many bands should take notes from.
Over all as I sit and write this I am a happy bunny, the summer is upon us once more (hooray!) and as far as I’m concerned one of the best live bands ever is back.
I’ve had the privilege of hearing rough workings of new songs and was blown away at some of the ferocity and cannot wait to hear them live………or on cd……or mp3…..or anything as long as they are in my possession!!!! Breed have been dubbed as one of the best unsigned bands within the UK. Lets hope that we can soon be saying they were ……but not now, they’re signed. All the best lads, Dan
Get yourselves over to Slice the Pie
