The Brent Canter Trio is one of the most exciting groups to emerge on the jazz scene in recent years. Formed in Los Angeles in late 2006, the Brent Canter Trio has quickly established a fan base ranging from college students to jazz club regulars, all attracted to the unique mix of modern jazz and more mainstream genres. The trio is led by twenty one year old composer/guitarist Brent Canter with Eli Sundelson on the Hammond B3 and Mark Banner on the drums. Canter's compositions are accessible and modern, drawing upon the influences of modern rock and R&B and incorporating the cutting edge improvisation which the modern jazz listener demands. Often compared to the Bad Plus and Medeski, Martin and Wood, The Brent Canter Trio pushes the organ, guitar and drums format into the 21st century. With the release the group’s first CD entitled Soundscape, the Brent Canter Trio is creating buzz on the West Coast. The Hollywood Weekly describes Canter’s compositions as “a new vocabulary for jazz” and “the new jazz standards for his generation” while LA Jazz Scene describes the sound of the Brent Canter Trio as “fresh and new…with its own sound in the organ trio tradition”. They have received airplay on LA's KJAZZ and KXLU and on college radio across the country and a recent video feature on Billboard.com. With performances at major venues ranging from Catalina's and the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles to Anna's Jazz Island in Berkeley, the Brent Canter Trio has quickly become a force in the west coast jazz scene. In February 2008 the group was the featured performer for thousands of guests at the opening of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new Broad Contemporary Art Museum. This led to an invitation to play in May 2008 at the LACMA Art Walk Afterparty sponsored by Indie 103.1, voted the best radio station in the country by Rolling Stone Magazine.
Having grown up in Los Angeles, Brent Canter was performing at prominent venues such as the Jazz Bakery, Catalina’s, the Roxy and the Whisky a Go Go while still in high school. Canter has crafted a unique approach to the guitar as a pupil of some of the finest guitarists in the world including the legendary Kenny Burrell, Anthony Wilson (Diana Krall) and Ted Greene. Technically skilled in bop, post-bop and modern jazz and with a background playing rock, funk and r&b, Canter’s playing and composing is a distinctly 21st century sound. His playing has been recognized with a grant from the Herb Alpert Foundation and participation in the 2008 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC recognizing the best under-30 jazz musicians.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Mark Banner has built himself a reputation for being an in-demand studio and live drummer on the west coast. In fact, in 2005, Banner was recognized as a world top five undiscovered drummer by modern drummer magazine. Having studied under such jazz greats as Peter Erskine and Clayton Cameron as well as legendary R&B drummers Mel Brown and Jerry Brown, Banner brings a unique sound to his instrument by blending elements of rock, jazz, and R&B, and Afro-Cuban into his playing with tremendous ease and confidence. Since his move to the Los Angeles area, the twenty-two year old has already recorded and performed with such distinct acts as: Rohn Shead, Prince’s side project The Twinz, Kelly Mcgrath, Lauren Mayhew, and Saige Walker.
Eli Sundelson has been amazing audiences with his electrifying, modern sound on the Hammond B-3 Organ since he was eighteen years old. After switching from piano to the organ in high school, Eli honed his organ chops under the tutelage of Wil Blades and on the bandstands of famous organ clubs such as the Boom Boom Room and Club Deluxe. Since then he has performed extensively around California and has gained a reputation for his ability to play everything from modern and experimental jazz to funk and soul. Sundelson is also the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Louis Armstrong Foundation award from ASCAP. _________________________________________________________________________
“The music of this trio is very enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. The sound is fluid and dynamic and it rises to an even higher level because of the musical taste of each player. The Brent Canter Trio has a special sound which is a welcome addition to the guitar, organ and drum tradition."
-Kenny Burrell
“One of the area’s most talented, energetic, and just plain ol’ good bands, The Brent Canter Trio represents a command of and respect for jazz’s history, yet, fortunately, they push the genre to invigorating heights. The combination of Canter’s innovative, fluid wizardry on strings, pyrotechnics of Sundelson (Jimmy Smith would be very pleased!), and unbelievable energy of Banner make The Brent Canter Trio one of the most refreshing bands on the scene. Check them out.”
