“Grace flows over and over again; wave upon wave it comes crashing in…”
These words are from the chorus of the song “Wash Me” from Brent Walker’s second CD, “Walkin Away”. They evoke an image of God’s love that is never-ending.
“I grew up on the coast of Florida, so I spent a lot of time at the beach. I was always amazed at waves and their never-ending nature. When you get knocked over by a wave, you stand up and wipe off your face, and there comes another one to knock you down again. So when I heard in a sermon how God’s love is like waves in the ocean, it totally clicked with me.”
In order to understand God’s love, we must first understand our sin, the fact that we are completely separated from God. We were born in sin, and we cannot possibly work our way out of it. Despite the fact that our society tells us we can become better people by doing good things or thinking positively, the Bible teaches us that God is the one who does the changing in our lives. This was done by Jesus’s death so many years ago.
“I was reading in John chapter 13 where Jesus washes his disciples feet, and I was blown away by His statement, ‘Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.’ These simple but very profound words sum up the essence of the gospel message – that Jesus came to clean up the dirt that is in our lives. We can’t clean ourselves, no matter how hard we try.”
Our response to Jesus’ death will take us in one of two directions. We can ignore it and continue walking down the same old trail we have been on. Or we can follow Him as He changes our path completely and puts us on the road Brent and Michaela sing about in “New Road”.
“I think the reason ‘New Road’ has been resonating so well with people is because it’s a universal concept of seeking change in our lives. If we are honest with ourselves, we can see we have areas that need improvement, and this song asks God to change our path and line it up with His desire for our lives.”
With song titles such as “That Idol”, “Better Man” and “Repent”, this CD may seem a bit too harsh. “I understand that the theme of repentance and change is not something we want to regularly listen to. But hopefully people will understand that these songs were written from a very real and honest place as I saw the need for change in certain areas of my own life. I hope my journey can help other people who are struggling with trying to change.”
That change comes because of the never-ending grace of God. While the ocean is beautiful to look at, the power of the waves comes when they are crashing around us. It is the same with God’s love. We just need to step in and get wet.
Brent Walker is a 29-year-old singer/songwriter based in Lake Wales, FL. He has been leading worship in various capacities since he was a teenager and has been writing songs ever since he learned to write his name (he never claimed those early songs to be any good...). Since then he has written many songs and recorded two CDs. He is an alumnus from Evangel University in Springfield, MO and travels extensively throughout the United States sharing his music. He and his wife Michaela are both elementary school teachers, and they are expecting their first child in March. Michaela is a singer as well, and she lends her vocal talents on stage and on Brent's CDs.
