   Bret Easton Ellis's Blurbs
About me:

Bret Easton Ellis was born in Los Angeles and raised in Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley, the son of Robert Martin Ellis, a wealthy property developer, and Dale Ellis, a housewife. His parents divorced in 1982. He was educated at The Buckley School, and then took a music-based course at Bennington College in Vermont, which is thinly disguised as Camden Arts College in his novel The Rules Of Attraction and his other books. He was a part-time musician in some minor 1980s bands, such as The Parents, before his first book was published while he was still a student. Less Than Zero, a tale of disaffected, rich teenagers in Los Angeles, was praised by critics and sold well (50,000 copies in its first year). He moved to New York in 1987 to release his second novel.

His most controversial work, the graphically violent novel American Psycho, was intended to be published by Simon & Schuster, but they withdrew after external protests (NOW, and many others, considered the novel dangerously misogynistic and worse) and pressure from Gulf & Western. The novel was later published by Vintage Books. Some consider this novel, whose protagonist, Patrick Bateman, is both a cartoonishly materialistic yuppie and a serial killer, to be an example of transgressive art. American Psycho has achieved considerable cult status.

Lunar Park is his most recent novel.

Hi,

I have some wonderful news. I’ve just had a baby: LEAVING THE COMFORT ZONE, my first book of collected photographs, is published this week in Europe, followed by a release in the States a month later.

After fifteen years of constant traveling, searching and straying, I’ve found myself backstage with rock stars, lost in the middle of the desert and everywhere in between; everywhere but where the road ends. So, LEAVING THE COMFORT ZONE is about taking a moment to look back on this wonderful, weird and winding path I’ve been on.

I hope that you'll purchase a copy and enjoy it; an artist is nothing without a response, so I look forward to hearing from you. You can order the book on Amazon or on Artbook. com. And of course, if at all possible, please buy it at a nearby shop. Support your local bookstore!

Thank you,

Olaf

Painting research project from Portland Art Museum Class~Trip
Amriel Simpson

1. The artist is William Trost Richards, who painted from 1833 to 1905 and is associated with the “Hudson River School” (those inspired by the “luminist” style of Thomas Cole [a style that uses light to increase intensity of scenes]).
2. What stirred my interest is that the painting that inspired me the most in the entire Portland Art Museum all six times I have been there is the painting “Marine” from 1884 showing an ocean scape that seems better than photo~graphically “real”...the turbulence and serenity of the waves as an entirety are captured sharply and this amazes me because the time period precurses photo~graphy for the most part (so how could one paint this while standing on a rocking ship! The waves keep changing as one views them!), though I found when researching that William Trost Richards actually was one of the first artists to use photo~graphy to attain “realism.” The scene is calming and green is my favorite color, the rolling green waves...I was not familiar with William Trost Richards before this visit. I believe this artist shares some of my own stylistic tendencies in that the colors chosen and the ambience created as well as a sense of over~all balance are similar (at least I strive toward what William Trost Richards creates).
3. the artist employs color in a way perhaps~best classified as RICH. The colors are perhaps slanted toward cool tones (blue and green light grey and white) almost exclusive of any other and this creates such an over~powering ambience and respect for the ocean (and its cool power.) There is a mixture of bright and dull, and when one inspects this specifically, the luminist aspects are clearly~visible, lots of “bright dull tones” and the slightest of hints of the brightest of tones together show the power of light (that it keeps itself hidden from full intensity always can be brighter like an unexplainable phenomenon toying with us yet i
