NATE DAWG-Drums
Music has always been important to me. My Grandfather Dawson was a Baptist minister who had a church in Norfolk, VA when I was born. My Grandmother, a classical pianist, played in the church band along with my Great-Grandfather Cortes who studied violin at the Conservatory of Music in Valencia, Spain. My Mother always sang lead in all the church choirs when I was a kid and I learned the gospel of southern hymnal music at a very young age. Grandma bought me my first drum set when I was 15 and I beat the holy hell out of that thing. I played in mostly original bands in high school and a punk outfit called "Thunder Pussy" in Myrtle Beach, SC before moving to Winter Park in 1995. The second day I was in Colorado I hooked up with "Oly" Olson and my first Colorado band was formed. We were called "Tunnel Six". I played in almost every band in Grand County and always went to Brethren Fast shows when they stopped through town. The Brethren took an interest in my band "Tunnel Six" and we did a couple shows with them in Denver. In Winter Park I always told my fellow musicians how much I liked the music and I wore my Brethren T-shirt, which had been given to me, with pride! Ironically, I recall one of my friends saying to me "Geez Nate, if you like'em that much why don't you work for them?" I had been a fan for 5 years before I was given the opportunity to play with the Brethren full time. Gordon Beasley, a long time friend of mine and former drummer of "Durt", had told me of his plans to retire as the Brethren's drummer and knew that I was band-less and available for the job. I jumped on the chance and beat out a competitor for the position.
Take the legendary, influential styles of Johnny Cash, Elvis, George Clinton & P-Funk, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Junior Brown . . . throw in some gear jammin', tire burnin', bootie shakin', wheelie poppin' fun - & you know what you've got? The electrified 'hillbilly funk' of the Brethren Fast Racing Team!
Over the years, each of the Messina brothers have developed their own styles by playing in different bands. About five years ago those styles hit a common chord when the 'brothers fast' decided to join forces. Combining Don's old school rockabilly influenced guitar licks with Mik's 70's funkified bass grooves wasn't easy at first; but with the addition of our rockin' skin man Nate, thousands of hours of playing, and hundreds of shows under their belts - the band has fused together to create their own unique style of music . . . Electrified Hillbilly Funk!

It was GREAT to take a break from my schoolwork and see you today at the Pepsi Center, Boys!!! I got some nice picts of the sunset right after you played, and would like to share them with you. I'll try to see you again soon, and not take 5 years in between time. I think the last time I saw you was in Grand Lake for the 4th of July with my sister and some friends. Too bad you couldn't play Bud-Wei-Ser, cause it was a "Coors" event today!! =)Keep on Rockin!! C'MON!!! =)
