CITY LIGHTS is the intimate and expansive debut album from Brett Bixby. Part living room confession and part landscape journey, this is a record you can listen through… a throwback to handcrafted albums that expand and unfold with repeated listens. The album is the audio equivalent of a must-see independent film. A listen may elicit the honesty of Neil Young, the grace of Nick Drake or the craft of Elvis Costello. As eardrums.blogspot.com insightfully says, “I believe in this album and the words Brett Bixby sings.”

Bixby is known to turn a phrase in simple but unexpected ways. The title track sets the stage, “The holes among the truth are like the stars along the sky, they’re easier to see without the city lights.” These words appear straightforward but when taken with the lushly spare musical backdrop, they feel more like the large roots you can see just above the surface. Produced with brushtrokes by Chris Karn (mastermind of Deccatree – myspace/deccatree), each track is like an audio polaroid colored with the touches of an inspired cast. From the string-laden latticework of ‘Fireside’ to the dream stitched intimacy of ‘Spilling’, Bixby has hit an easy stride and the music is a reflection of a newfound ability to stretch into wide open spaces.

This is a record with a seasoned sensibility, deftly combining hues of folk, rock and pop into an honest blend of homegrown songs that will lull you from your sense of time. Bixby honed his craft as part of a collective of friends who created out of a musical ark of a warehouse known in Long Beach, CA as ‘The Space’. Underground shows there were an incubator of music and friendship. Since fronting the headstrong Long Beach rock outfit Twelvehourmary and collaborating with the likes of Buchanan, The Dibs, and Chris Paul Overall, Brett took his experiences and emerged with a 10 song album that offers up the reflection of an artist with a distinctive vision.

CITY LIGHTS is an independent record grown from the ground up - a listen for yourself proposition. Put this record in your car stereo and let the songs color the landscapes outside. Word of mouth is spreading and 2009 is likely to see Brett Bixby rise in the realm of stellar independent music.

Album now available online @ cdbaby.com or downloadable on iTunes.

Brett toured in 2007 with Rocco Deluca & The Burden. The band headlined a US summer tour after successful opening runs with Keane and John Mayer. Deluca is a long time friend from Long Beach and the two collaborated as musical mates in formative years. Rocco has recorded a followup album with legendary producer Daniel Lanois and Brett can be heard on some tracks on the 2009 release 'Mercy'. Visit www.roccodeluca.com for information. You will also find Brett playing with Molly Jenson. Molly has signed with Bully Pulpit/Nettwerk and her album 'Maybe Tomorrow', produced by Vanguard artist Greg Laswell, will be released in March or 2009. Visit www.mollyjenson.com for more information.
