| About Brett Deubner, violist |
My profile was customized using the Taming the Beast.net MySpace Layout Generator
Violist Brett Deubner is establishing himself as one of the most accomplished violists of his generation. Inspiring worldwide critical acclaim, the Newark Star-Ledger commented "There is a burning intensity to Deubner's playing, and a refreshing variation in the color of his viola tone." Vienna’s Doblinger Press “Klang Punkte” has joined in these accolades by describing his performances as “Virtuoso and sparkling.”
Born in San Francisco, Mr. Deubner is fast gaining a reputation for his career as a chamber musician and concerto soloist. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he studied with Martha Katz and John Graham and was awarded the prestigious Performers Certificate in Viola Performance.
Mr. Deubner has appeared as soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the North Shore Philharmonic, and the Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra. Recent concerto engagements with the Astoria Symphony, the Kiev Camerata in the Ukraine, Orchestra 2001 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the city of Buenos Aires Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador add to Mr. Deubner’s rise on the international concert scene. This season Deubner will perform Harold in Italy with the New Sussex Symphony, the Telemann and Hindemith concertos with the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra, the Mozart Symphony in Portland and Jose Manuel Lezcano’s Concerto in Carnegie Hall. Brett will also be Visiting Professor at the Fundacion Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil del Ecuador where he will be conducting the Philharmonic of Ecuador as well as performing Hindemith’s Trauermusik. Later in the season he will be the soloist on an international tour with the National Symphony Orchestra of Loja performing the Martinu Concerto. Additionally he will solo with the Central Jersey Philharmonic and premiere Samuel Adler’s new concerto at the Eastman School of Music.
Recital and chamber music appearances have taken him to Washington D.C.’s Phillips Collection, Los Angeles’ Zipper Hall, Sundays Live at the L.A. County Museum of Art, New York City’s Merkin Hall, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Ethical Cultural Society, as well as recitals in Denver, Columbus, St. Louis, the Galapagos Islands, Quito, Philadelphia, Germany, Brazil and Juneau, Alaska. He has performed live on South American radio and television, and been the featured in podcasts and radio talk shows. Mr. Deubner has been a featured artist at such venerable festivals as Caramoor, Kent-Blossom, Norfolk and collaborated with the Tokyo Quartet, the Chicago String Quartet, the Vermeer Quartet, the Colorado Quartet, and the Claremont Trio. Next season he will perform with the Eroica Trio in Philadelphia and collaborate with Van Cliburn award winning pianist Gabriela Martinez and Grammy nominated pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti.
Brett Deubner has already recorded several successful recordings of chamber music and two new viola concertos. His CD,”English Viola Romance” was praised by the Minneapolis Times,” this disc is a must for fans of the viola and of English music!” Mr. Deubner has collaborated with musical partner pianist Gary Kirkpatrick in the CD “Viola Dreams” featuring the sonatas of Martinu, Brahms, and Hindemith which received glowing reviews from the Newshouse Service and the Newark Star-Ledger.
Mr. Deubner recently recorded the two concertos of Frank Lewin with the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia conducted by Rossen Milanov for the Albany Label. He has also just recorded the viola concerto of Trent Johnson with the National Chamber Orchestra of Ukraine and next season will premiere and record Andrew Rudin’s concerto with Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia. Speaking of the Lewin recording, Michael Redmond of the Princeton Packet said, “I simply cannot imagine the piece with any solo instrument other than Mr. Deubner’s." Two more concerto recording projects are planned for next season as well as another CD of short pieces for viola and piano and a recording of the complete works for viola by Frank Levy.
Brett Deubner serves on the faculty of the Boyer School of Music and Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, is the Concert Artist in Viola at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, serves as visiting professor in Quito, Ecuador and is the Artistic Director of the Woodmere Arts Collective Series.
