Brian Derek, born August 25, 1957 in Detroit. Much later: headed to Boston from Detroit in 1976 and studied at Berklee and started gigging in new england with The Brubeck Bros and legendary jazz guitarist Mike Stern. Studied arranging, composition, orchestration and performance focusing on the fretless Fender bass.

An electric bass virtuoso currently performing and teaching fretless bass,jazz harmony/theory and recording and leading a jazz quartet/trio. I have worked in every situation imaginable; jazz gigs,fusion gigs,latin gigs,funk gigs,combinations of all of the above gigs,extreme pop gigs(5th Dimension,Neil Sedaka etc),show gigs,cruise ship gigs,smaller dinner/party boat gigs,restraunt gigs,theater gigs,teaching/clinic gigs,blues gigs,dance gigs,wedding gigs,freejazz-improv-loft gigs,flat-bed truck gigs,beach show gigs,beach jazz gigs,poetry slam gigs,producer gigs..........
I like to use mainly fretless and fender basses on the gig.
Always looking for a gig, I take pride in being a chameleon and have realised after all this time that doing so much work in such a wide range of styles, that it makes one extremely versatile. Getting "out of your comfort zone" and being able to deliver the goods is crucial! I still consider myself as a jazz musician. I am able to play with authenticity, just about any style of electric bass playing. Jazz being my main preference. I am an improvisor of the first order ( of course that's what i'm told!). Improvisation and composition being at the forefront of my musical interests and abilities..
Hire me for your next session!!
A brief list of names that I have worked or played with over the years: Jay McShann, Peter Erskine, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny,Stephen Stills,The Brubeck Bros.,Joe Beck,5th Dimension,Neil Sedaka,The Platters, Your name here, etc.....

{{NEW DVD!!}}
Concert footage of the Brian Derek Quartet now available.
The dvd is approximately an hour in length and features original music by Brian Derek. Hard to put a single label on this music. There is a cooking jazz samba "The Golden Section"; a nod to Jobim w/"Red Roofs Blue Sky"; "The Big B" is written for my boy!;"Northern Lights" is an impressionistic piece;"Emma's Theme" was composed for my wife agnes;"Time Line" is a mozambique-ish burn in 6/8 and "But Then" (w/technical diffy's-a little extra noise) that has a beautiful bass melody and cooking 6/8 section.
A preview of some of the concert is posted on this page.
If interested, please contact me (Brian) to attain your copy of the DVD or a CD.
Thanks and hope to hear from you!

Hey there, Here's one from left field... Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat? A while back I came across some very disturbing information, which inspired me to make this video: Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaIim3Rj7L4 Both artistic (ensure you've good enough sound to enjoy the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice. Though the source materials are somewhat aged, the fundamentals remain relevant today. I encourage all to visit the YouTube web page above to learn more (Show your support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly re-post and circulate as widely as possible. Help to raise awareness. Say have you checked out my web site (http://www.faberoptime.com) recently? Take care and keep in touch. Best, Faber. "Just a guy trying to make the world a better place."
