About me:
Brian was one of the most promising young motorcycle aces in the American Motorcycle Association’s flat track ranks and netted various championships and honors including the highly coveted “600cc AMA National Championship” and “AMA 600cc National Hot Shoe Championship” titles. A racing injury sidelined Shirley in 1999 and his two-wheel career came to a sudden end in 2000.
The talented young racer seized an opportunity to compete in stock cars and soon returned to his winning ways. In his first full season of competition in dirt racing’s premier super late model division, Brian won a track championship and “National Rookie of the Year” honors with the largest dirt sanctioning body – United Midwestern Promoters (UMP). After only two years in the highly competitive late model ranks, Brian took his #3s team on the road with the Northern Allstars Late Model Series, which is co-owned by NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader, and yet again claimed top honors as the series’ “Rookie of the Year” and “National Champion”. In 2005, the native Illinoisan was offered an opportunity to partner with two legendary powerhouses in the dirt late model industry – chassis builder, CJ Rayburn, and Illinois’ business owner and racing benefactor, Ed Petroff, and Petroff Towing. Shirley joined the stable of fellow Petroff teams that boast honors including over a dozen premier dirt late model series championships, 5 “World 100” wins and four “Dirt Track World Championship” titles. Two-time NHRA Top Fuel Champion Larry Dixon, NHRA Nitro Funny Car pilot Tommy Johnson Jr. and NASCAR stars Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace and Tony Stewart are also linked to the potent organization. The guidance and structure offered by the veteran mentors and teammates allowed Brian to continue to excel and hone his talents behind the wheel as he picked up seven wins during the 2005 season including his largest win to date at the UMP Summernationals’ Finale at Oakshade (OH) Raceway.
In 2006, the team once again competed with a variety of regional and national tours including the two premier traveling series – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series and Lucas Oil DirtCar Series. Additional marquee, unsanctioned special events such as the month-long summer tour-de-force UMP Summernationals, Show Me 100, Knoxville Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals, Dixie Shootout and Dirt Track World Championship rounded out the season that included 68 different events at 30 unique tracks in ten states. Additionally, sixteen events were nationally televised on SPEED and ESPN2 with over 25 also receiving radio broadcast coverage. The #3s visited victory lane twelve times and finished in the Top-5 during 44% of all starts and Top-10 in 61% of all entered events. Brian also raised the bar with three prestigious wins in three consecutive weeks – the “USA World 50” at Ken Schrader, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Tony Stewart’s Paducah Int’l Raceway; “Larry Phillips Memorial” in his debut performance at I-44 Raceway in Lebanon, MO; and an amazing last-to-first win over reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart for the $35,000 Knoxville “Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals”.
