TelevisionTURN IT OFF! I cannot stand 99% of what is on TV. I think that it sucks completely. I encourage you to please not watch TV (or spend too much time on MySpace). To put it simply; it's just not cool. TV is corporate propaganda. The news is a bunch of sophmoric half truths and white lies told by fake acting men and pretty women with prominent jaw bones. I try my best not to watch but sometimes I find myself channel surfing in a hotel room or someplace (no cable at home) and I'm disgusted by what I see. The focus on non-news like Anna Nicole or Amican Idol distracts people from the real issues such as the lack of democracy in our country, the miltary-industrial complex and the destruction of our environment. That being said I sometimes watch CSPAN, Public Television or the News. I mostly watch DVD's if I'm gonna watch something. I do enjoy Aqua Teen Hungar Force.
BooksAnything by Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn(People's History of the United States changed my life), The Autobiography of Malcolm X, other political books and non-fiction, Mark Twain, lots of Buddhist and Zen books, lots of magazines, indy media, alternative news sites, activist newspapers, as well as some mainstream press. I can also get into the Lord of the Rings and biographys of Jerry Garcia, Paul Mcartney and stuff like that.
HeroesHard to list but how about: Malcolm X, Martin Luthur King, Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Cindy Sheehan, Ani Difranco, Jaco Pastorius, Archbishop Oscar Romero, all the bands and musicians that I'm inspired by, anyone who has ever had to stand up against repression and injustice.

   Brian O'Connell's Blurbs
About me:
Born and raised in Amherst, NY (a suburb of Buffalo) and emigrated to Boston at age 22. Active in anti-war and social justice activism. I teach music lessons on bass and guitar and play bass in The Gary Backstrom Band (www.garybackstrom.com) plus solo shows on the Touch Guitar (www.warrguitars.com). By day I work in sales at a worker-owned cooperative company, Equal Exchange, which is the nations largest 100% Fair Trade Coffee company. I currently live in Jamaica Plain, MA with my amazing partner Jenna.
Who I'd like to meet:
Old friends, musicians, former students (and new students) as well as activists and concerned citizens who want to break away from a corporate controlled culture that has been imposed from above by profit minded kings of commerce. MySpace is a little disturbing to me. Two words: Rubert Murdoch. I hope to reach out and engage in some political, artistic and philosophical discussion in a democratic atmosphere. I seek those who are interested in speaking truth to power, setting our own ajenda of discussion and action (centered around humanitarianism, ecological sustainability and equal distribution of rights and resources) and generally promting open discussion on important issues.

Brian, i must convey my sincerest gratitude for your presence on this planet. First of all, you rock and even though I missed you at the Vic Wooten concert cuz you were sick, you still rock. Secondly, I just REALLY discovered Michael Hedges this past week and it comes with the perfect timing as I'm getting reimmersed in my creativity these days. I thank YOU because you introduced me to him. Sure it took me 4 freakin' years but I'm get it now. This guy is a seriously kindred spirit, it's overwhelming actually.
Let's hang soon.
lots of love,
Sean

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!!

Red Sox, Patriots, Halloween...Don't forget about the election on Tuesday, November 6th!!!

A public meeting for the Geary campaign will be held on Thursday,
November 1st at UMass-Boston. 6:30pm in the Atrium Graphics room of
the Campus Center's Upper Level, room 211.

On Saturday, November 3rd, we will be having our last stand-out. Come hold a sign for the Geary campaign!
We'll be at the corner of Belgrade Avenue and Center Street in West Roxbury (near the Roche Brothers

Remember, election day is Tuesday, November 6th. A week from yesterday. Get out the vote. Call your friends and family. Tell them to vote, and tell them to vote GEARY!! We're gonna shake this city up!
