Nicaragua remains one of the poorest countries in Latin America despite some recent advances. The country is in the midst of a complex process of political, economic, demographic and epidemiological transition. Learn More » The history behind the poverty As we move into the 21st century, Nicaragua is a long way from most people’s minds. We remember vaguely about a revolution in the 1980s. But the Cold War is over and, unfortunately, so is our collective concern for this small Central American country. Learn More »
![]() We are a non-profit community development organization that takes volunteers to developing countries to work, learn, and reflect. Through the process of living and working with local communities on construction, health and environmental projects, Bridges promotes cross-cultural learning, a deepening awareness of our global interdependence and a commitment to the common good. Our Trips On a Bridges trip, we encourage volunteers to think critically and carefully about our global interdependence, foreign policies, economic impact, and stereotypes. Though Bridges trips are typically thought of as service trips, we encourage volunteers to think of service as an experience of "what we can do together" rather than "what we can do for them." Our sincere hope is that by living and working along side one another we can build friendships and understanding that are life changing for volunteers on both sides of the "bridge." Where we work Depending on the site you travel to and the interest of your group, you may be involved in construction, medical/public health, or environmental conservation projects. Our construction projects are in all four sites in Nicaragua and include houses, schools, and community centers. Our medical and public health work involves clinic work, home visits, public health education, and working with local practitioners and is happening in Siuna and Ticuantepe, Nicaragua.
