Brand New Folk Club run by musicians. We are aiming to promote folk and acoustic music to a wider audience as well as keep those already converted happy.
Venue - The Upstairs bar of the Hobgoblin on London Road, Brighton. Very close to the main Brighton train station. It has wooden floors and great acoustics. (and yes they serve Hobgoblin! and probably Hobgoblins too!)
As you can see above, often we are running a session which is lead by competition winning Irish Musicians. However, a variety is nice so come along what ever kind of tunes you play or songs you sing. (although we are talking folk/acoustic here!)
Hope to see you soon, all the best, Alex, Tess and Sarah
More Details
The session is £FREE!
The folk club is every monthish. As well as the main artist you also get:~
~:Support from Irish house band 'GR'
+ floor spots from great local musicians. If you are interested in performing please email brightonfolkclub@hotmail.co.uk
All for £5! That's little more than a pint these days!
The next two artist nights feature:
Anna Tabush on the 12th of June
Anna Tabbush is one of the hottest new British folk singer-songwriters on the scene. Her honest lyrics and haunting melodies combine to create a unique, heart-breaking sound.
"Gentle melodies and ambient musings from charming Surrey singer/songwriter Anna, who steps across the divide from folk to angelic pop in evocative originals with fresh-faced innocence and enchanting style"
Nuala Honan and Lizzy Westcott on the 10th of July
"The incredible Australian songstress who's inspirational lyrics will change your life forever! She's an immensely talented singer/songwiter who never fails to get her audiences up on their feet! A truly inspirational artist. One of kind"
With a voice that “..curls, rasps and slides, slips and skims around her tightly knit and complex lyrics” (RedRag, local Devon Street Press),
On this particular trip to the seaside, Nuala will be accomapanied by superb fiddler Lizzy Westcott, most recently seen playing the Albert Hall with Show of Hands!
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
Eliza Carthy's Dreams Of Breathing Underwater tour kicks off this week!
To co-incide with her gig at The Brighton Komedia, Eliza will be appearing at Brighton's Borderline records to sign records and maybe even sing a few tunes. Why not come down and say hi?
Thursday 11th September, 2.30pm BRIGHTON - Borderline Records 41 Gardner Street, Brighton, BN1 1UP (Playing at the Komedia that night)
