Neo/retro burlesque shows are flowering all over the US, Canada and the world. It's high time for Myrtle Beach SC to get in on this sexy and highly entertaining trend.

The fact is, we haven't had anything like real burlesque dancing here on a consistent basis since the lovely and bountifully talented Reddi Sloane "The Ann-Margret of Burlesque" (as she was billed after relocating here from New York) hung up her pasties -- and the old Oasis Club burly-q joint out on 501,
where I worked for a short time as a deejay, went out of business.

We haven't had real burlesque comedy to speak of here since ... well, we've never had it to speak of in my lifetime, unless you count my own naughty bits (of humor) as a comic MC when we barnstormed the Carolinas with the Mighty Mighty Aphrodite Show ... or our Halloween Follies and Buzzman & Odd Company productions with Upstage Downtown in the late 80's.

As for the exciting, eclectic new breed of burlesque entertainment, UK impresario Chaz Royal cracked open the market here very nicely with a really hot show by the Fluff Girls at the late, lamented Social a few years back.

That show proved that the interest is here for these kinds of productions, and I believe it is viable for a much wider range of venues.

[NOTE: I'm researching reports of burlesque/cabaret entertainment being featured at Harry The Hat's in Myrtle Beach, under it's original owners in the 90's, when I lived in Winton-Salem. As soon as I get something more solid, I'll incorporate that info here]

A growing group of dedicated, creative and passionate people are working our nards and nibblets off to make it happen.

What we envision is a talent pool here locally focused on the packaging and presentation of neo/retro burlesque theatrics -- which will create productions, promotions and events that will also play host to visiting talent from the USA, Canada, Mexico, the world ... and maybe beyond ...

"The dress and wig were Irving's idea, his special touch to make it kinkier. I was a horny young hick from the sticks, and straight as six o'clock -- and I had adored Bettie Page since I'd first snuck a peek at her pictures in FLIRT Magazine, on the newsstand at the hometown Walgreen's. So I was sportin' wood for sure!

"That was the day that 'Martina' was born in my psyche, I guess. Took her a long time to gestate, about 35 years. I first got up in drag again for one of the Halloween Follies shows. Nowadays I play that old broad really broad, you know, the way that Uncle Miltie used to do with his female characters back in the day.

"But I only do the dress-up thing for the shows. It's mainly just another character for me. But still, in the right circumstances -- like if there's a really hot babe in the show, or even in the audience, that reminds me of sweet, succulent Bettie in her prime -- I can flash back to that sweatty shoot in the back room of Irving Klaw's funky little bookstore-studio, and it's an instant, really intense turn-on for me.(laughs) ... SSHWING!!
