Its all about the music; regardless of circumstances & background, all that matters is songs that get you hooked and gigs that make you happy. The Legion are a band whom posses both of those traits. They've been writing and gigging for 3 years, based in Leicester but now working from posts throughout the UK and having done many a gig further afield including performances at Dublin Castle, the Monto Water Rats & Artrocker club night in London.
They've crafted there songs from an eclectic influence & background in one of the band members bedrooms gradually growing in number and experience as they progressed learning and taking from everyone and everything they came across to procure the sounds you hear today.
Their first album "All that Optimism" released in the autumn of 2008 on FortheSakeofheSong was reviewed in the national press and a single taken from that, "Kodak Colour +" was played on various prominent radio shows including Steve Lamacq and Tim Robinson. This led to them being included in the BBC's "Top 30 hotly tipped New bands for 2009" list. They then went on to release a limited edition sequel EP entitled "I Love & Hate being alone" on their own record label to be in conjunction with their festival appearance at Summer Sundae Weekender in August 2009.
Please check back here for gigs and news. Anyone interested in booking The Legion for a gig, please contact forthesakeofthesong@hotmail.com
"Dripping with sarcasm and a little frustration by the sounds of it..." ('IN NEW MUSIC WE TRUST' SHOW - BBC RADIO 1 - 30 HOTTEST NEW BANDS TIPPED FOR 2009)
“Remarkably lip curling in attitude!” (STEVE LAMACQ-BBC RADIO 1)
“Raucous Sneering Fun” (TOM ROBINSON - BBC RADIO 6)
"Frustrated, sarcastic, raucous, sneering, the music of the Legion has certainly got attitude, the album "All that Optimism" appears to be designed to take all that positive thinking right out of your mind and replace it with a sense of realism. But hay it makes for fine spiky chaotic music, just how we like it." (BBC Bristol Introducing)
"Lavishly talented" (BRICKLOBBER PROMOTIONS)
“At the first listen you suspect this band is another of those new groups heavily influenced by the rise and fall of The Libertines. But the second time you hear it you realise The Legion deserve a bit more then that.
The band produce heavy indie rock riffs, driven by ferocious drum beats.
The band benefit from the impressive vocals of singer Stewart Nutting.
Yes, you can hear Libs and Arctics in there, but you can also find all the teenage angst you will ever need.
There are genuine pop moments on this debut created by four Leicester teenagers whose music belies their annoyingly young years.
4/5” (MC, LEICESTER MERCURY)
“…a clever album with a load of good and energetic rock tracks…” (GROOVE, SWEDEN)
”...Punchy, youthful, vigorous, eclectically proggy indie – well worth watching out for." (DUBLIN CASTLE)
”...Blues based indie with a serious tempo. Superb stuff and we'll definately play these again." (NO THRILLS NIGHT @ THE PAVILION)
"The Legion have a hatful of tunes of the variety and melody of a punked up Super Furies or Franz Ferdinand with Stewart Nuttings suburban tales as astute and sharp as Bromheads or Monkeys. The playing is abrasive and full throttle and not surprisingly has already caught the attention of BBCs Steve Lamacq. Debut album 'All that optimism' is set for release in October on Leicester indie label For The Sake Of The Song." (ARTROCKER)
"The Legion burst into their set with some manic guitar playing and a lightening fast drummer. Very tight and upbeat with some interesting tunes to boot." (OBS 2008)
"[Stand By Your Man] What a great track...Listen to the album and be sure to check out Cheryl Tweedy!" (MATT RICHARDS - TSM RADIO UK)
”...All That Optimism is their debut album and comes on the back of several well-received shows around the Midlands..." (CUL DE SAC MUSIC MAGAZINE)
"Observational indie pop from the headlining Leicester tykes, whose average age is just 17" - (TIMEOUT MAGAZINE, LONDON)
"They're pretty cool they are..." (DRUNK MAN AT STEWARTS DOOR)
”...Stewart Nuttings lyrics are full of spot on observations from suburban life, heartfelt words on one-way love and witty poetry. Stewart is the captivating and charismatic front man. Add frantic drums and catchy strings from brothers Craig and Martin Shaw, and newcomer Alex Simmons, and you have The Legion." (ENTS24. COM)
"together for 2 years - the Legion deliver a remarkably mature artrock for their age. Their myspace list of inspirations reads like a who's who of hip alt-rock and indie from the last ten years or more!" (ARTROCKER MAGAZINE)
"Debut album from the blues based indie Leicester band THE LEGION. The band have only played together for just over one year and their average age is 18.
Recorded, mixed and mastered at Deadline Studios in Leicester in only 4 days their punchy, youthful, vigorous, eclectically proggy indie sound is displayed on their debut album." (SHELLSHOCK.CO.UK)
"...what the doctor ordered; Im feeling better already!!" (ARTROCKER RADIO)
"...A Top Band - I See Big Things Ahead..."(MELTING POT)
"Original, Lively and Entertaining. Need I say anymore? Press play!" (BEN DAVIS - THETEENRADIO.COM)
"Murphy's pick: "Bumface Jones" (the name alone!)
"Also on Steve Lamacq’s “hot list” are The Legion. Single ‘Kodak Colour +’, taken from their debut album ‘All That Optimism’ is gaining radio play both in The UK, Europe and The US, and it’s easy to see why; their songs are clever, raw and full of attitude." - The Musician
I can't imagine a metronome was anywhere in the studio when this record was happening. It's not that it sounds out of time, but the shifting of gears that can happen - and does - in every song can be extremely dramatic and sometimes abrupt. But it's what makes this band what it is. If they stuck to a simple feel and time signature all they way through, it's probably not going to be as appealing as their spastic and hectic vibe turned out to be. It's abruptly shifty enough through most of the album to make it difficult to fit into the show, but nevertheless, this is a great record!" (Undiscovered Radio Network)

Even tho our best mate Tom doesn't seem to really care what our best mate Steve is saying, what our best mate Steve is saying is all very true! Our best mate Steve hits the nail right on its head, when he describes SXSW as a sweet shop. Now start saving your pocket money and go next year - you will never be the same again.
Pretty good guys, like the songs. I'm originally from Leicester, used to live in Lutterworth. But I've been in France for, what, 17 years now. Cheers for the add. Dom
