ONE TO WATCH/SUNDAY SUN-TIMES - September 11, 2005
Black is back on Chicago's rock scene:
Healthy White Baby has a "Beatles-in-Hamburg sound, all sharp pop
hooks
played with bare-knuckled abandon through a grimy lo-fi haze." -
Chicago Sun
Times
"Healthy White Baby's raucous 10 songs go straight for the gut.
Instead of
woozy bitterness or self-pity, the trio opts for stripped-down,
bluesy rock
'n'roll somewhere between Dr. Feelgood and 'Live at Max's.'" - HARP
Laurie & John
UNCUT - four stars
Twins born in 1967, the Stirratts last played together in '80s countryites The Hilltops. Since then John's played with Uncle Tupelo (and now Wilco and Autumn Defense) while Laurie helped form the late, lamented Blue Mountain. Arabella distills their influences, boasting woody acoustics, soft-shoe shuffles and flights of melody. "Juniper" sounds like a Dylan original, and "Mistral" like early Neil Young (with Jeff Tweedy on guitar). But they spin their own colours on "We'll Meet Again" - all blended harmonies - and the slide-and steel-riddled "Canadian Noon". Brad Jones, Will Kimbrough and Wilco's Glenn Kotche also star.
MOJO - three stars
Dreamy, drifting and melancholy, this is The Carpenters meets Autumn Defense the latter another of John (Stirratt of Wilco)'s side-projects. Laurie is his twin sister, whose pure innocent voice makes a perfectly bittersweet foil.
