Dutch songwriter Bart Dietvorst and Australian singer GD Allan met in Melbourne in the Dandenong Ranges. Bart is well known in The Netherlands for his associations with bands such as Wealthy Beggar and 2nd Place Driver, with whom he has released several albums. GD is a well known musician and singer in Melbourne and Tasmania, having hundreds of gigs under his belt, and several independent albums.
In 2008, Bart took the year off work in Europe and went to live in Melbourne, Australia. He met GD, showed him some sketches of songs, GD wrote lyrics and vocal arrangements and hung out in his pyjamas. They wrote and recorded a full length album together. They shifted Bart’s couch, turned his living room into a makeshift studio, bought a cheap microphone, guitar and borrowed GD’s daughter’s ukulele. To keep the creative and spontaneous vibe going they kept almost all First takes of every recording session. Thus, the album has a loose, live feel.
Before Bart returned to the Netherlands, Bart and GD did their first Broken Sun gig as an acoustic duo at Ruby’s Lounge in Belgrave, an alternative music mecca on the outskirts of Melbourne. Rob Mertens overdubbed bass guitar in Bart’s studio in Delft, The Netherlands, and the album was mixed, mastered and printed. It truly was an international affair!! The result is a diverse set of songs with influences from many styles (alternative, pop, rock, electro, funk, acoustic) blended together into the Broken Sun ROCKTROFUNK. Artists we like are (among others) are Beck, Beatles, MGMT, Gutter Twins, Mark Lanegan and Starsailor.
The self-titled album ‘Broken Sun’ contains 11 tracks and is available through iTunes from May 2009.
