The Brotherhood Of Pagans est un groupe goth français crée en mars 1990. Bâti sur les cendres de deux autres
formations “Cold Wave” – Itchy _Souls et Nuits Hérétiques_, il est alors composé de Alien (guitare rythmique et
chant), Coccs (synthés), Sailor (batterie), Elrik (basse) et Vox populi (guitare).
Si en 1991, le groupe commence à donner ses premiers concerts, c’est en 1993 que les “BOP” se font réellement
connaître grâce, notamment, à une rencontre décisive avec le label français Darkland Of Tears. Celui-ci leur a
permis, entre autres, d’ouvrir un concert de Corpus Delicti à Nice et de se produire au festival de Dorsten
(Allemagne) devant plus de 800 personnes, marquant ainsi le début de leur notoriété.
Cette collaboration avec Darkland Of Tears leur permet, en outre, de figurer sur de nombreuses compilations :
celles de leur label d’abord, comme Cold Tears” ou “Gothicland”, puis dans des compilations produites par des
labels internationaux de renom comme la « Goth Box » de Cleopatra ou le « Death by Dawn » de Appolyon. Au total les
Brotherhood figurent dans une douzaine de compilations sur les 5 continents marquant leur capacité à séduire tous
les publics avant même d’avoir produit un seul album.
Celui-ci sort néanmoins en mars 1995. Immédiatement « Tales of Vampires » connaît un grand succès. Distribué
dans 17 pays, il voit émerger deux grands classiques du genre : l’implacable « Resurrection » et l’indémodable «
Guilty ».
Malheureusement, à l’apogée de sa gloire, le groupe se dissout suite au départ du bassiste Elrick. Plus qu’un
membre, c’est un frère qui s’en va et le groupe décide alors de se mettre en sommeil.
Un sommeil qui, comme dans les contes de fées, durera une décennie…
Néanmoins, le groupe n’a jamais cessé de se voir, mais il apparaissait difficile de relancer la machine après
de si longues années. Et surtout de ressusciter la confrérie sans deux des membres d’origine, Alien, qui poursuit
désormais une carrière solo sous le nom de Alien Marteens et Elrick qui oeuvre désormais au sein du groupe
Disorder.
En 2006 néanmoins, Vox, Coccs et Sailor (qui assure désormais le chant) décident de reprendre ensemble le
chemin du studio et de s’atteler à l’écriture d’un nouvel album « Only Once ».
Le premier travail, et non des moindres, a été de mêler leurs influences musicales éclectiques, nourries par 10
années de maturité, de rencontres et de curiosité. On y croise en vrac, And Also the Trees, Killing Joke,
Siouxsie, Chameleons, F242, Siglo XX, Norma-Loy, Tanit, Marc Seberg, Clair Obscur, Young Gods, Midnight Oil, Joy
Division, Cure, Wall Of Voodoo, Virgin Prunes, Christian Death, Bauhaus, Birthday Party, Mission, Danse Society,
Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins et… Brotherhood of Pagans ’95.
Ce patchwork d’influences nourrit ainsi un processus de création qui durera trois années, pour donner
naissance à « Only Once ». Un album où l’on retrouve indéniablement la pâte du premier, mais qui oscille plus
volontiers entre les différents axes du mouvement gothique et qui s’égare parfois aux confins de la pop et du rock.
La traduction musicale d’une toute
nouvelle façon de travailler pour le groupe qui a composé en vase clos, sans musiciens extérieurs, devant ainsi
mêler non seulement leurs influences mais aussi enregistrer plusieurs instruments chacun, apprendre de nouvelles
méthodes, confronter leurs univers artistiques, pour aboutir à une synthèse sonore née de ce fracassant mélange des
genres.
Original, surprenant, plus mature et abouti que le précédent, Only Once adresse néanmoins un clin d’œil aux
fans de la premières heures en proposant une reprise toute personnelle du mythique « Resurrection ».
A noter que le premier morceau “Only Once” issu de cet album du même nom a été offert au label « Str8line »
pour la compilation « Movement One » en 2007 avant que le label Alone Prod ne se propose de soutenir cette …
résurrection avec la sortie de l’album en février 2009.
The Brotherhood of Pagans is a French Goth group formed in March 1990. Risen from the ashes of two other groups of
the Cold Wave genre – Itchy Souls and Nuits Heretiques, it initially comprised Alien (rhythm guitar and vocals),
Coccs (synthesiser), Sailor (drums), Elrik (Bass) and Vox Populi (guitar).
The group began playing it’s first live gigs in 1991, but it was during the course of 1993 that the ‘BOP’
started to make themselves known, thanks principally to the beginning of a their relationship with the French label
‘Darkland of Tears’. Among other things, this enabled the BOP to provide support for Corpus Delicti at a concert
in Nice, and to appear at a Festival in Dorsten (Germany) in front of 800 people. This marked the start of their
journey.
This collaboration with Darkland of Tears further allowed BOP access to numerous compilation albums, firstly
those on the Darkland label such as ‘Cold Tears’ and ‘Gothicland’, then on compilations produced by International
labels of renown like ‘Goth Box’ by Cleopatra, and ‘Death by Dawn’ by Appolyon. The Brotherhood featured on around
a dozen compilations on 5 continents, evidence of their ability to attract public attention even though they had
yet to produce their first album.
The afore-mentioned first album finally appeared in March 1995. ‘Tales of Vampires’ was an immediate success.
Released in 17 countries, their debut album threw up 2 classics of the genre, the unrelenting ‘Resurrection’ and
the never to be forgotten ‘Guilty’.
Unfortunately at the peak of it’s glory, the band split following the departure of it’s bassist Elrik. More
than just a group member, Elrik was a brother, and following his departure the group decided to put the BOP into
hibernation.
A sleep that, as in all good Fairy Tales, lasted 10 years
Yet, they still met regularly, it just seemed too difficult to start the machine after such a long time. And
also, how could they revive the Brotherhood without two of its original members? Indeed, Alien was working on a
solo project under the name Alien Marteens, and Elrick had joined the band Disorder.
In 2006, Vox, Coccs and Sailor (now the singer of the band) decided to head for the studio in order to start
writing a new album: “Only Once”.
The first task, (and not the least), was to blend the various musical influences they had gathered, nurtured
and matured from 10 years of curiosity and encounters. Amongst these influences were: And Also the Trees, Killing
Joke, Siouxsie, Chameleons, F242, Siglo XX, Norma-Loy, Tanit, Marc Seberg, Clair Obscur, Young Gods, Midnight Oil,
Joy Division, Cure, Wall Of Voodoo, Virgin Prunes, Christian Death, Bauhaus, Birthday Party, Mission, Danse
Society, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins and… Brotherhood of Pagans ’95.
This combination of influences would feed their creative juices for 3 years and lead to the birth of the album
“Only Once”
You will obviously find in “Only Once” the unique style and colours of the first album, but this new work is
more daring, exploring a wide range of Goth horizons, sometimes veering towards the edge of pop and rock music.
“Only Once” is also the musical output of a brand new approach to song-writing. With no help from additional
musicians, they had to learn new instruments, new methods, whilst confronting their respective musical universes
and influences, with the result being a dishevelling sound, born from a musical storm.
“Only Once” is original, surprising, and a more mature piece than their previous album, but it is also meant
for early BOP fans, with, for example, a very personal cover version of the mythical track “Resurrection”.
The first track of the album, also called “Only Once” was previously featured on the Str8line compilation
“Movement One” in 2007, long before the ‘Alone Prod’ label offered to support this … ‘Resurrection’ with the
release of the Brotherhood’s new album in February 09
Seriously guys, I really wish you would just put "Resurrection" on your page and just leave it there!!! I have been a very serious fan of Gothic music for about 20 years now and I'm only 29 years old. Out of every Gothic song I have ever heard including all of the great bands you could probably, possibly think of, "Resurrection," by "Brotherhood of Pagans" has , seriously, been my favorite song ever since the very first time I have ever heard it. The opening guitar line followed by the strong drum and then the haunting voice all mixes wonderfully together to create quite possibly the best Goth song ever created! But that's just my opinion, but it is the truth. So, for God's sake. GIVE ME "RESURRECTION!!!" Or I'll just upload it myself!!!!! Ha!
