Bushido Brothers is a song-writing, performing and recording partnership with its own distinctive style. You might catch them as a duo (David James and John Telfer) or as a different duo (Kate Benson James and David James) or as a five-piece (David, John, Kate, Jason Flinter and Janec Lillis-James). Just occasionally, they multiply well beyond that number.
The music itself defies easy categorisation. We really hope you enjoy it, whatever boxes it goes into. There are five pieces here and more coming soon. Two of them were recently selected for the official CD of the 2008 MIDEM festival in Cannes. All were recorded at the excellent Ruby Studios in Bristol:
MOVING FORWARD - a favourite of the live set, this is a bitter-sweet tale of attraction, love and letting go; FANTASY, written and sung by Kate Benson James; ANGEL - This is a happy song written a few years ago immediately after the sad death of a friend who was far too young to be lost. Look out for Kate's great harmonies; CAN'T SAY NO which was originally inspired by the ordinary aspects of the extraordinary story of Natascha Kampusch. On this one you may detect the influence of too long spent listening to Allman Brothers records in a former life...but there's also some Steely Dan meets Bootsy Collins in the funky section. Finally there is SONATA, a guitar piece by David, beautifully orchestrated by John, which some people say sounds very ‘English’. That's as may be, but what's with the Japanese name? What's this 'Bushido' when it's at home?
'Bushido' is usually translated as ‘the way of the warrior’. However, it does not mean war-like! It refers to an unwritten code of ethics evolved from Confucian thought which places emphasis on loyalty, respect, courage and support for joint ideals.
