Outer Banks, NC based Frozen Head & the Squirrels is a diverse, modernistic band whose live shows combine Outer Banks, NC based Frozen Head & the Squirrels is a diverse, modernistic band whose live shows combine surf rock, reggae, and indie covers derived from the last 5 decades. Playing authentic 60's surf guitar, and covering Talking Heads, Ween, Pixies, Bowie, Sublime, Violent Femmes, etc, you can catch this "party band" consistently playing in the Outer Banks, NC area and all over the East Coast!! Front-Man Broughton Aycock brings his up-beat riffs, and eclectic vocal style into the mix, while Jayson "Mole" Hicks's fusion of funky rock and reggae drumming contributes another dimension to the traditional groove of the band. The stage is boosted by classical bassist Stephan Carbocci's creative lines and heavy sub sound.
The band's extensive repertoire consists of over 200 songs, 15 hours of music, mostly selections by artists listed in the same genres as Ween, Sublime, Dick Dale, the Police, and David Bowie, but also includes Bluegrass tunes, 60's-style Surf, High Energy Rock, and even Jazz with some Funky Jams added in. Familiar songs may be heard, as well as new sounds that are sure to please. The group's diversity attracts a similarly diverse crowd (18 - 50), with sets tailored to the audience that each venue attracts. Depending on the number of musicians involved, and the general atmosphere of the event, Frozen Head & the Squirrels may be found rocking out electric or acoustic, and performing as a trio, duo, or even solo.
Since the band's inception in 2005, most of the band's time has been spent performing at bars, restaurants, festivals, weddings, and special events in and around the Outer Banks. The show archive lists over 100 bookings in 2007. Band members have shared the bill with many national recording aritists such as The Wailers, Tim Reynolds, and Fighting Gravity. Over the last few years, many live recordings have been produced as well as a few studio demos. Frozen Head & the Squirrels has always been avidly involved in supporting and promoting the Outer Banks' art and music scene, working with other projects, festivals, and events, including charities such as Hotline and Relay for Life. Many reviews and articles have been written about the band in local papers, as well as radio interviews and airplay. The group is constantly generating a good crowd by self promotion through the internet, event posters, local media, networking through contacts, and merchandise. The band is technologically fully equipped, but prefers to use a venue's equipment if that is what produces the best sound.
