"Word of mouth takes a while to travel, and it's a very noisy world out there,
so you need someone like Bruce, who also happens to have a very nice mouth."
- John Lennon, on the discovery that he and Yoko actually hired a publicist.
The first records I ever owned were The Beatles debut album on
VeeJay Records, followed by the 45 on Capitol of 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand/
I Saw Her Standing There.' I was just a little kid, but all my friends were
older, and turned me on to music.
My grandparents bumped into The Beatles in the Caribbean around
1964 and knowing that I was a fan (they were really cool), got me their autographs.
In prep school, I was a dj on our school station (FM, no less) and got
involved in the concert committee.
I helped bring Jesse Colin Young and his band, The Youngbloods, to
The Choate School.
In my sixth form year, I met John Lennon by accident in NYC, while
doing an off-campus project working in television.
When we met again, and John & Yoko hired me as their publicist,
we both agreed it was fate.
In college, I was on radio again, as well as running the Concert Committee.
I brought Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Jefferson Starship/Hot Tuna,
Little Feat, and The Grateful Dead to The College of William & Mary,
in Virginia.
After college, I went to work for Norman Lear (All in The Family, Different
Strokes, The Jeffersons, The Facts of Life, etc.), as a Script Editor, and
Production Assistant.
I left that to work in the music business.
My first PR/Publicity Firm was called Low Key Enterprises, Inc.
This was established right after working as for John & Yoko
on Double Fantasy.
My subsequent clients included The Channel Club (the largest rock club in Boston at the time), and I began handling regional promotion for many recording artists.
Here's an abbreviated list, in no particular order:
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robert Palmer, The Specials, John Mellencamp, Evan Dando & The Lemonheads, The Band, The New Riders of the Purple Sage (members included musicians from The Grateful Dead), Paul Weller & The Jam, Tears For Fears, OMD, Mission of Burma, Buzzcocks, Nervous Eaters, Little Feat, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Joan Jett, Aimee Mann, Duran Duran, Squeeze, Madness, Aerosmith, Black Flag, The Cars, The Cure, Ray Davies/The Kinks, and many more.
I have also been involved with arranging commercial soundtracks, corporate communications, festivals, benefits; and conceived the advertising campaign for Guinness, when one of my brothers was the CEO.
Today, Rock Management USA is a leading independent Management & Promotions Agency representing the best of cutting edge music worldwide.
If you are an outstanding musician and would like to further your career,
we would like to hear from you.
My one on one connections with clientele is what differentiates me from so many faceless/nameless people who are assigned to tasks in the ordinary management/publicity firm, or at major record companies.
I am well known, well respected, and well liked. Which is why people pick up the phone when I call, read my press releases, and generally give me the time of day, knowing that I only represent artists and causes worthy of attention.
And like the name of my initial corporation, I still take a 'low key' approach to promotion and publicity, because it is always the high road to the transfer of enthusiasm.
Cheers!
Bruce
