Bruno E. was born in the city of Goiânia, Goiás State in the mid-west of Brazil. Jazz was always his passion, thanks to the influence of his father who would listen to records by Louis Armstrong & Oscar Peterson, as well as Eumir Deodato, Tom Jobim, Vinícius and Toquinho.
In 1991, Bruno moved to São Paulo and since then has been working professionally as a music producer. He began his career producing hip-hop groups from São Paulo. Soon after, Bruno delved into the underground electronic music scene where he met and worked with other producers & DJs including Mad Zoo & Mau Mau. He went on to become one of the linchpins in the Brazilian Electronic scene, taking on remix work for various independent record companies as well as majors like Warner Brasil & France, Sony and artists including Planet Hemp & Morcheeba.
In 1998, he formed the label SambaLoco which launched big-name DJs like Patife, Marky, XRS, Mad Zoo, Drumagick and Brazilian Drum´n´Bass was born. Within SambaLoco, Bruno E. launched his own project “O Discurso” which mixed electronic music with folkloric music from the Northeast. In the final days of the label in 2001, Bruno began to get into making jazz. He met tenor saxophonist Márcio Negri.
From there a partnership grew and together they recorded a track called Lovely Arthur. Márcio brought other musicians to the recording session including great trombonist Bocato (from the group Metalurgia), drummer Marco da Costa, bassist Fábio Sá and trumpet player Cláudio Faria. To complete the team, Bruno invited along pianist Giba Estebez. This track led to the making of the album Lovely Arthur which was launched in Brazil, Europe and Japan in 2003.
The album received great praise in magazines like Straight No Chaser (UK), Vibrations (France), Jazz+ (Brazil), as well as others.
In 2005, Bruno has released Alma Sessions. Featuring on the album are a number of legendary talents. The opening track ‘Soul Storm’ is a deep, touching jazzy curtain-raiser co-written and featuring Cesar Camargo Mariano, a living Brazilian jazz legend who worked intimately with all the biggest names including Elis Regina whom he was married to. Tom Zé, the Brazilian Godfather of Invention and Tropicalia. Caetano and Gil’s metaphorical older brother sings on ‘Mister Modernismo’ prophesizing that ‘if the future runs any faster it’s going to catch the past’s tail!’. Then comes the chilling vocal genius of Xantoné Blacq, a true, young Stevie Wonder from London – he sings on ‘Welcome Home’ and ‘Alma’. The track ‘Feel’ is filled with fantastic strings, superb drumming and Sarah Ann Webb on vocals, who used to be the frontwoman of nineties acid jazz combo D’Influence. Her wealth of experience supporting the likes of Prince and Michael Jackson those years ago shines through in this hauntingly soulful ballad. Finally, the last remaining singer to grace this record is none other than Patricia Marx who has been working with the likes of Bruno E and 4Hero for years. Patricia brings to light her sweet tones on ‘Is Love’ and ‘Claras Revoluções’ before teaming up with young Brazilian R&B star, Silvera, on ‘Sons’.
