In 1996 DJ Sultan/Bruno Bartra was a completely alien creature to the world of music and sound when suddenly, a spring morning, while he played an improvised basketball match at high school, he fell, with help from his classmate Luis Fernando Sifuentes, and broke three left foot toes. Never-ending weeks tied up to bed followed, and besides devouring books as an insane in the foot would, he decided to take one of his sister's old tapes, and turn on that strange machine that the rest of the world called a tape recorder. The first notes of “Break On Through” woke up his musical curiosity forever and he became an unbearable music lover. He would spend half day reading and the other half listening to other tapes as well as the radio stations Rock 101 and Óxido. The natural step forward, after turning 18 years old and in the last year of high school, was to work as a salesman in Tower Records store at Altavista where, after a few months, he started organizing rock, jazz and hip-hop gigs that disturbed the customers of Sanborn's (restaurant/coffee shop/store) just below: they preferred to have their cups of coffee silently, instead of listening to the punch of the drums above them. The cosmic ballet went on (Spock/Leonard Nimoy, in The Simpsons, “Marge vs. the Monorail” episode 9F10) and finally he started his DJ career in 1998 as a resident in Tizapán/San Ángel's mythical Foro Ideal… there he mixed in Maldita Vecindad, Tanzwut and Manolín el Médico de la Salsa concerts amongst many others; later on that year, after the owners of the venue split, DJ Sultan toured the beaches of Oaxaca for three weeks and returned to the city to find himself in that so common and well known situation: unemployment. He mixed here and there at several parties, until he found La Victoria, where he mixed at Los de Abajo's debut album release party, in 1999, and after this, he became resident DJ at the place. Besides an eccentric owner with wide nose-holes, La Victoria could be distinguished for its constant problems with neighbors regarding “noise”, and after one of the several times the venue was closed up, DJ Sultan migrated to Europe, where he got connected to radical mestiza music and returned to Mexico in 2000 with a new spirit, to play in several venues, events and parties such as Escaparate, The Velvet, Cenote Azul, Foro Alicia and the Political Sciences Faculty at CU. By that time he started writing album and concert reviews, as well as interviews with national and foreign rock musicians for the Internet magazine El Foco. He's journalism career had started… as well as college, in march 2000, after a long strike at the UNAM: sociology the career, and Political Sciences the faculty. In 2002 he went to Montréal where he mixed at Reggie's and L'Aquarium, being resident in both venues, and he also produced and hosted the radio show Green Beat Latino Vibes at CJLO. He wrote a couple of articles as well for the local university newspaper, The Concordian. However, that business only gave him enough money for drugs and rock and roll, so he had to work as an illegal cook helper at an Iranian restaurant. Back in his hometown –Mexico City– in 2003, DJ Sultan's gig intensity was reduced, and he focused on his journalism and sociology careers. In December he started working for Reforma newspaper and during nine months he was inactive as a DJ, except for some remixes and exotic pieces, like his acid versions of Tin Tan, Don McLean and The Police classics that he created during the cold weekend late-nights. It was finally in 2004 that he founded alongside Jesús Pacheco (DJ: Pacheco, Peach Melba, Pachecristo Superestrasa, Tío Jessie, Patxec) and Leonel Ríos (130N31) the Logia Electric Fan (www.myspace.com/logiaelectricfan), that had its first gig the 25th of November at Dada X, in downtown Mexico City. Later on, in 2005, Leonardo Tarifeño (DJ Tudo Bem) joined the DJ collective, and he is now Logia's ambassador in Brazil. In 2007, Héctor Douglas, (DJ Rigoberto) joined the project as well. Nowadays DJ Sultán/Bruno Bartra as the unitary double headed monster that he has become, continues with his journalism work in press and television, through which he tries to analyze, study and promote all kinds of alternative culture that wander the city, country and the world. In the last year, his remix production has grown considerably; who knows, he might just take the mic one day and make a version of Rockdrigo González, or some similar madness.

DJ Sultán/Bruno Bartra era una criatura totalmente ajena al mundo de la música en 1996 cuando súbitamente, una mañana primaveral, mientras se echaba una cascarita de básquetbol en la prepa cayó, con asistencia de su compañero Luis Fernando Sifuentes, y se fracturó tres dedos del pie izquierdo. Fueron semanas interminables de estar encallado en cama, y además de devorar libros cual enfermo del pie, decidió tomar un cassette de su hermana, y prender ese aparato tan extraño para él que el resto del mundo solía llamar estéreo. Las primeras notas de “Break On Through” despertaron para siempre su curiosidad musical y lo convirtieron de golpe en un melómano insoportable. Más adelante, pasaría la mitad del día leyendo, y la otra escuchando diversos cassettes, además de las estaciones de radio Rock 101 y Óxido. El paso natural fue, una vez cumplida la mayoría de edad y en el último año de la preparatoria, trabajar como vendedor de discos en la sección de jazz de la sucursal de Tower Records en Altavista donde, al poco tiempo, comenzó a organizar tocadas de rock, jazz y hip-hop que desquiciaban a los clientes del Sanborn's justo debajo: preferían echar su cafecito silenciosamente que escuchar los tumbos de una batería sobre ellos. El ballet cósmico había empezado, (Spock/Leonard Nimoy, en Los Simpsons, episodio 9F10 “Marge Contra el Monorriel”) y finalmente inició su carrera como DJ en 1998 siendo residente del mítico Foro Ideal en Tizapán/San Ángel... ahí se presentó como DJ además en conciertos de Maldita Vecindad, Tanzwut, Manolín el Médico de la Salsa y muchos más; poco después, a fines de ese mismo año, tras una separación entre los socios del lugar, DJ Sultán recorrió las playas de Oaxaca durante tres semanas y volvió para encontrarse en esa situación tan común y conocida: el desempleo. Recorrió las fiestas de la Ciudad de México, pinchando a diestra y siniestra, hasta toparse con La Victoria, donde mezcló en la presentación del primer disco de Los de Abajo, en 1999, y a partir de allí, obtuvo una residencia en el bar de la colonia Roma. Además de un excéntrico propietario con hábiles fosas nasales, La Victoria se distinguía por sus problemas semanales con los vecinos y autoridades por lo cual, después de una de las múltiples clausuras del local, DJ Sultán emigró a Europa, y tras conectarse con la música radical mestiza, regresó en enero de 2000 a México con nuevos bríos, para presentarse en una gran diversidad de lugares, eventos y reventones: Escaparate, El Velvet, El Cenote Azul, Foro Alicia y la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de CU, entre otros. Además, por esas épocas comenzó a publicar en la revista de Internet El Foco reseñas de discos y conciertos, así como entrevistas con rockeros, reggaeros y jazzeros nacionales y foráneos. Había iniciado su carrera periodística... y también la universitaria, en marzo de 2000, tras la huelga de la UNAM: sociología la carrera, y Ciencias Políticas la facultad. En 2002, se marchó a Montréal donde mezcló en el Reggie's y el Aquarium, siendo residente en ambos, además de que condujo y produjo el programa de radio Green Beat Latino Vibes en la CJLO, y escribió un par de artículos en el diario universitario local, The Concordian. Sin embargo, ese negocio simplemente le dejaba dinero para el vicio, el ocio y el rocanrrol, así que tuvo que trabajar como pinche de cocina en un restaurante iraní. Ya de vuelta a su ciudad natal –México DF– en 2003, DJ Sultán bajó la intensidad de sus pinchadas, para enfocarse a sus carreras universitaria y periodística: en diciembre de ese año comenzó a trabajar para el diario Reforma, y pasó nueve meses de inactividad como DJ, exceptuando algunos remixes y piezas exóticas, como las versiones ácidas de clásicos de Tin Tan, Don McLean y Police, que realizaba en las frescas madrugadas capitalinas de fin de semana. Fue hasta 2004 que fundó tras la iniciativa de Jesús Pacheco (DJ: Pacheco, Peach Melba, Pachecristo Superestrasa, Tío Jessie, Patxec) y Leonel Ríos (130N31) la Logia Electric Fan (www.myspace.com/logiaelectricfan), que se estrenó el 25 de noviembre de ese año en el Dada X del Centro Histórico; más adelante, en 2005, Leonardo Tarifeño (DJ Tudo Bem) se unió a la logia de DJs, y ahora funge su embajador en Brasil, mientras que a principios de 2007, Héctor Douglas (DJ Rigoberto) también se adhirió a la Logia Electric Fan. Actualmente DJ Sultán/Bruno Bartra, como el ente unitario mitológico de dos cabezas que es, continúa su trabajo periodístico impreso y en televisión, con el que busca analizar, estudiar y difundir todo tipo de culturas alternativas que pululan por la ciudad, el país y el mundo. En el último año, su producción de remixes ha aumentado considerablemente. Nada más nos falta que se ponga a hablar con un micrófono, lo grabe, y haga un cóver a Rockdrigo González o alguna locura por el estilo.
