HISTORY
 The Building
The original building, situated in the old fish market was constructed over two centuries ago, but it wasn't until 1896 that it became a restaurant.
Famous Clients
During World War II One of the celebrities who came to dine there was General Felgenhauer.
After the liberation of Belgium, the restaurant became the general meeting place for many eminent politicians of the Flemish Liberal Party, who frequented the establishment on a daily basis. A few of the government’s ministers even had their own table permanently reserved in their name and the restaurant was on the verge of becoming an "annex" of Belgium’s Parliament, and numerous important decisions were made here.
During the 1960's, the restaurant was particularly appreciated by Jacques Brel and other famous entertainers. In those days, the wine cellars of the restaurant could not store enough champagne to satisfy its patrons.

The Hotel/Restaurant
In 1960 a small hotel was created above the old stable-block behind the restaurant with just 6 rooms.
In 1988 Michel and Sophie Smeesters took over the both the the restaurant and the hotel, which became "the smallest hotel in Brussels". Michel's superb cuisine made the the restaurant very popular, with an excellent reputation for its seafood.
At the end of 2003, Michel and Sophie decided to close the restaurant in order to concentrate on developing the hotel.
Hotel welcome, with it's 16 completely renovated rooms,
may no longer be the "smallest hotel in Brussels" but it's certainly the cutest ! |
