Lectrice publique, Frédérique Bruyas conçoit la lecture à voix haute comme un inépuisable champ d’expériences humaines, dont l’objet est la littérature dans sa variété et sa vitalité. Son goût profond pour la parole adressée, une parole à l’écriture singulière et le dénuement de cette parole transmise le livre en main est à l’origine de son engagement artistique.
Sa formation initiale de comédienne et de musicienne a développé chez elle une écoute sensible de la matière littéraire. L’écriture contemporaine d’un auteur comme Jacques Rebotier a très tôt influencé la direction de son travail. Pour elle, la voix-instrument doit être au service de l’écriture pour révéler ce qui fait la chair d’une pensée. Dès lors, elle appréhende chaque texte comme une « partition de paroles », quel que soit le répertoire : classique ou contemporain.
Aujourd'hui, elle s'intéresse particulièrement à la forme « lecture-concert », fruit de ses rencontres avec des auteurs et des musiciens, et poursuit ses recherches artistiques vers d’autres concepts : lecture polyphonique (avec le collectif Vox Libris), lecture bilingue, lecture et arts numériques…
Les écrivains que j’aime lire à voix haute ne cherchent pas à expliquer le monde mais à l’exprimer. La précision, l’exactitude, la maîtrise avec lesquelles ils manient le langage, les préservent de toute illusion quant à rendre compte directement du monde.
Le texte, objet d’art littéraire est à lire comme une carte où le réel se produit sur une autre scène. Le texte est l’espace qui inscrit ce déplacement du réel sur la scène de la pensée, en conserve les traces, les parcours, les itinéraires. Les mots en sont l’ombre portée, la mesure de l’écart.
Frédérique Bruyas, public reader. As a public reader Frederique Bruyas conceives public reading as an inexhaustible field of human experience, whose subject is literature in its infinite variety. Her artistic commitment is perfectly rooted in the oral expression of the written word, in all its singularity reading aloud, book in hand.
Trained as an actress and as a musician she has developed an intimate relationship with literature. Contemporary playwright Jacques Rebotier was a seminal influence in her work. She believes that the human voice should be the instrument which gives flesh to an author’s thought. She approaches text as a “score of words” be it of classical or contemporary style.
Drawing upon her experience with both authors and musicians she created the concept of: “concert-readings”, whilst developing her artistic research directed towards polyphonic readings (with the group Vox Libris), bilingual readings, and a combination of reading with the digital arts.
Frederique Bruyas lives in Paris. She worked with many internationally recognised musicians, sound-designers, composers and video-artists, who have sought her participation in performances combining her reading with their sounds and images.
The writers I like to read out loud don’t try to explain the world, but to express it. Their precision, exactitude, and mastery of the language keep them from any illusion one might have about being able to provide a straight description of the world. The text, a literary artifact, is to be read like a map where the real is brought to life on another stage. The text is the written account of the displacement of the real onto the mind’s eye, retaining its outline, its path, and its itinerary. The words are the shadows of the real, the measurable distances from the real.
