In early 2007, in the small town of Hutchinson Kansas, 5 local kids got together to form a metal band in an all but dead local music scene. Eliot Lundemo (guitars), Kyle Crank (more guitars), Mike Morrell (bass), and then singer Travis Nash and drummer Skyler Mead called there venture Pariah. During a year of grueling practice and recording sessions, the guys acquired a new drummer in Tom Smalling and a new singer in local “legend” Sean “Twinkie” Story.
With a new line-up and the added experience the two new members brought, Pariah became Beneath The Burning Sun and began practicing hard for a busy 2008. The new members required a slightly different musical direction, with Tom having a slightly less “straight-forward metal” approach to drumming and Twink’s far more melodic vocal approach. With these new elements, the songs began to take on a new life that proved better than the last. With a song writing process that almost always starts with Kyle and Eliot’s multi-dimensional guitar work, Tom and Mike’s driving drums and bass have something to latch onto, while Twink still has plenty of room to find a melody and pull it to the forefront. Another dimension was added to the music when the other guys decided to take up microphones and aid in the vocal onslaught.
Since Twink’s addition to the band in March ’08, BTBS have developed quite the following, aiding them in winning the 2008 Hutchfest Battle of the Bands and helping them acquire shows from Wichita to Great Bend to Manhattan, KS. After an amazing response to the live show, and the first run of BTBS merchandise (which sold out in under 2 weeks), the guys have begun to get the attention of the local bar scene, and are building awesome working relationships with bands like Ashamed, Severed, Bled Bone Dry, and many others. As the rewards start to slowly come in, the guys continue to have more fun than ever both on and offstage. All in all, you can sum up Beneath The Burning Sun in one quote, often used by the guys in regards to having to play a small venue: “5 people or 50,000, we are going to go out there and do what we do every time, and give everyone that came out to see us their money’s worth…”
