About Buckingham and Nicks
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham met at a Young Life gathering in 1966 when he was 16 and she was 17. Stevie heard him playing "California Dreaming" on the piano and singing melody, and she couldn't resist coming over and joining him with her harmony. At that moment, the vocal chemistry that would eventually take them to the top of the charts was born.
Lindsey was the bass player in a group called Fritz that also included keyboardist Javier Pacheco, drummer Bob Aguirre, and lead guitarist Brian Kane. When they lost their female lead singer the next year, Lindsey remembered Stevie Nicks. She was asked to join and did. The group gained a good amount of local notoriety in San Francisco. However, Lindsey and Stevie were told that they would be more marketable as a duo, and thus in 1970, they left Fritz and San Francisco to form Buckingham Nicks in Los Angeles. According to Stevie, it is at this time that the two became romantically involved.
Times were hard for the two. Stevie worked as a waitress while Lindsey tried to develop their material. They were poor and struggling. Even after they recorded the self-titled album Buckingham Nicks in 1973, things didn't look up. The album flopped and they were dropped by their label.
Then, Mick Fleetwood came along. He was looking for a new lead guitarist after the departure of Bob Welch, and upon happening to hear "Frozen Love" while investigating a studio, he decided Lindsey was his man. Lindsey refused to join without Stevie and so, on New Year's Even 1974, the two agreed to join Fleetwood Mac. And the rest is history!
