ABOUT "LA ESPUMA DE LOS DIAS" (Froth of days).
The Esteban Sehinkman Quintet
(Music » Jazz)
Argentinian pianist Sehinkman's self-produced Chicago debut, enigmatically titled "Froth of the Days," is already a candidate for my list of CDs of the year. The title and cover art are enigmatic and the music original, soulful and intelligent. I first heard Sehinkman backing his Berklee buddy, singer Steve Evans. He functioned well as accompanist but didn't unduly prick the ears. However, the CD permits some focus on this mature-beyond-years talent. Sehinkman hasn't been in town long but pulled together a useful quintet with trumpeter Brian Schwab, saxist Jeff Morrison, bassist Jeff Hanley and drummer Noritaka Tanaka. The group has a cohesive, entrenched sound and come over with hip force, like an Andrew Hill or Art Blakey Blue Note session. Schwab's attack whiffs of Dave Douglas, Morrison has the no-nonsense drive of Joe Henderson, meaning everybody plays like reputations depend on it. There is poetry and passion in the pianist's restraint--though there is bebop in places, he is no Bud Powell. Sehinkman's strength lies in a sensibility to counterpoint and dramatic shifts of rhythm and mood, his touch is at once twilit, then directional. The program is varied: "La Brava" tips a gaucho hat to folkloric rhythms, the exquisite dirge "Pesante" is draped in the gorgeous melancholy of tango, and "Seven Colors" and "Three Humoresques" reveal French classical proclivities. Sehinkman's lineup for tonight's release party is new, including in-demand altoist Taku Akiyama and bassist Josh Abrams, and the gig is doubly critical because, with the cursed blessing of the INS, Sehinkman must return to Buenos Aires later this week. *****
