About me:

ABC & The Build Malawi Project - What We Do...
Action for the Benefit of Children (ABC) is a small UK and Malawian charity that is embarking on its first major development project called 'Build Malawi'. The project aims to build a primary school for children between the ages of 5 and 15 years in the village of Chisala, in the Nkhata Bay district in northern Malawi. As with most physical structures in Africa, we anticipate that the school will also be used as a community centre that could provide informal education for both children and adults in the general community as well.

The project is as grass roots as you can get! We will be working directly with and for the community there and are very keen to encourage them to take the initiative for sustainable and responsible living. We will use the building process to facilitate an ‘On-the-job’ training scheme that will provide better employment opportunities for the trainees chosen. The school itself will provide many more opportunities for primary school children to gain a basic education and help spread the word about good health and sanitation, HIV/AIDS awareness, good nutrition, girl empowerment and the importance of the natural environment.

Community Schemes & Programmes
The space will also provide an opportunity to introduce some vocational and skills development training using local expertise and resources. It will also provide a forum for debate on a number of issues and stigmas that need addressing, such as HIV/AIDS awareness and increased political involvement. The commmunity itself will come up with many of the initiatives for their own development and ABC will help facilitate this. In this rural society, this mainly means helping promoting small scale commercial enterprise and improving food security. Other schemes that are thriving in other areas of Malawi include mushroom growing projects, solar fruit drying, bee/honey making, carpentry workshops, building/bricklaying, sewing groups, sports teams and irrigation/agricultural techniques.

Local Partners
Right from the start, we consulted with the key figures and bodies in the area and we will be working closely with the structures already in place there. These include District government, local Traditional Authorities and chiefs, village headmen and of course, the community itself. ABC wants to compliment their efforts, especially with regards to HIV/ AIDS and help educate about the reality of the disease in and provide support for victims. We want to help combat other killers like Malaria and simple diseases, like diarrhoea, that kills many children.

We Plan To Start...
The Build Malawi project plans to start building the primary school in late August 2007 and we really need your support. Please do get involved if you feel you have something to offer. We are a small and intimate organisation that welcomes any input and advice.

Project Manager Tanya Clarke will be in Malawi from late July and will be writing a blog and posting up pictures on Myspace and the Gallery page of the website. We hope that you will follow our progress.

We have also set up the Donations page on the website, so please do have a look and consider contributing to the school in this way.
